Royal Enfield Motorcycle News and Reviews
Royal Enfield is the longest continually-running motorcycle company in the world. Starting in 1901 as The Enfield Cycle Company Limited of Redditch, Worcestershire, Royal Enfield has endured a tumultuous early history, being passed from owner to owner and split into various amalgamations. By 1955, however, the Enfield Cycle Company partnered with Madras Motors in India in forming Enfield of India, based in Chennai, and this would ultimately prove the lifeblood of the company.
From 1957 onwards, acquisitions of machinery were gradually completed and by 1962, all components to make a complete Royal Enfield motorcycle were create in India.
Royal Enfield produced bicycles at its Redditch factory until it closed in early 1967 and production of motorcycles ceased in 1970 and the original Redditch, Worcestershire-based company was dissolved in 1971. All production was now done in India.
Royal Enfield is now the quintessential Indian motorcycle company, seen as something of a status symbol in the home country. The company sells seven models ranging from 350cc singles to 650cc twins in the standard, retro roadster, café racer, adventure and cruiser segments.
