Hard Contact by “Jammin’ Jimmy” into “Tony D” was Captured Perfectly by Charlie Morey
In this week’s Throwback we dial back the clock 50 years to August of 1974, and the AMA 500cc Motocross National at the Highland Hills Motocross track in Hillsboro, Ohio. In the second moto Kawasaki’s Jimmy Weinert and CZ rider were battling for the lead when Weinert dove underneath DiStefano in a right-hand turn and the two collided. Just as that happen Charlie Morey clicked the shutter on his camera and captured one of the most iconic photographs in all of motocross. In this classic image the handlebar of Jammin’ Jimmy’s Kawasaki is nearly into Tony D’s chin. Surprisingly it was Weinert who hit the ground after this contact, but he was quicky back up and went on to win the national over DiStefano. The photo made the cover of the that week’s edition of Cycle News.
