German became the all-time wins leader in 250 Grand Prix History with his Assen Win
In this week’s Throwback we dial back the time machine 37 years to June of 1987. The site was Assen and the Dutch TT weekend. In the Dutch 250cc Grand Prix Road Race Rothmans Honda’s West German ace Anton Mang (center) became the winningest rider in 250cc GP history, capturing his 28th career win to surpass Phil Read with whom he was tied. It was Mang’s fourth win of the season. He would double that number on the way to winning that year’s 250GP championship. The 37-year-old Mang charged up from 12th on the first lap to beat HB-Romer’s Reinhold Roth (left) by 6.45 seconds at the finish. Third was Campsa Honda’s Sito Pons (right).
