The 2024 Canadian Superbike Champion, Ben Young (BMW), ended his fourth championship campaign in style by snatching a last-lap victory over archrival Alex Dumas (Ducati) at the final round of the series at Ontario’s Shannonville Motorsport Park on September 1.
Dumas, who had led from start to finish to claim race one on Saturday after earlier taking pole position, led every lap of race two except the last one as Young recovered from a tardy start to reel in the Ducati rider at over half a second per lap, eventually taking the lead on the second attempt with half a lap to go.
“These guys obviously got a better start than me, so I just tried to settle into a rhythm again and follow fairly close, but not too closely,” Young said. “Eventually, I was able to pull the trigger on Sam [Guerin], but Alex had no weak points. I just saw a little opportunity on the last lap and was able to find a way through, so it’s nice to end the year on top.”
It was a heartbreaking loss for Dumas, who joined the series midway through the 2024 season on the Ducati after a career spent with Suzuki.
“We tried a new setup today; it didn’t really work the way we wanted it but we’re still making lots of progress,” Dumas said. “I would have loved to do the full season, but I’m happy to finish the year with two wins. Hopefully I’m back next year, but things are pretty up in the air.”
Rounding out the podium for a second day in a row was Guerin, who once again found himself unable to claw his way into the lead but kept his rivals closer than in race one as he claimed his eighth podium this season.
The series points have Young now a four-time CSBK Champion on 224 from Guerin’s 174 and veteran Jordan Szoke (Kawasaki) third on 146.CN
