Kyle Ryde (Yamaha) claimed a thrilling victory in the opening race of the Bennetts British Superbike Championship at Thruxton, which featured an intense battle involving seven riders. The race saw the lead change multiple times on the final lap, with Tommy Bridewell (Honda) initially leading but eventually being overtaken by Ryde, Danny Kent (Yamaha), and others. Ryde secured the win after a dramatic final lap, with Vickers finishing second and Jason O’Halloran (Kawasaki) third, pushing Bridewell to fourth. Billy McConnell (Honda) took fifth, and Leon Haslam (BMW) finished sixth.
It settled down in race two, somewhat, although the margin of victory was still tiny. Vickers took control for the remainder of the meeting, taking two wins to close to within 25 points of Bridewell in the championship lead.
Max Cook (Kawasaki) started strong from pole position in race two, but there was early drama when Glenn Irwin (Ducati) suffered a gigantic highside crash, leading to a red flag. After the restart, Storm Stacey (Kawasaki) initially led, but the race was interrupted again by a crash involving Alex Olsen (Honda) and Franco Bourne (Honda), prompting a safety car. When racing resumed, Cook held the lead until Vickers overtook him on the penultimate lap. Cook secured second place, marking his first podium finish, while Danny Kent snatched third from Josh Brookes (BMW), who finished fourth with McConnell rounding out the top five.
In the final race, Kent initially took the lead, battling with Bridewell and McConnell. Bridewell led briefly but was slowed by a quickshifter problem, dropping to sixth by the finish. Vickers seized the lead on lap five, managing to hold on for the win despite a late scare from Kent. Kent moved into second place with five laps to go, holding off McConnell, who earned his team’s first podium since joining the championship. Ryde finished fourth, while Charlie Nesbitt (Honda) matched his best result of the season in fifth.
The title race has Bridewell on top on 248 from Ryde’s 223 and Christian Iddon’s 213.CN
