OMG Grilla Yamaha’s Kyle Ryde had a productive weekend, August 24-26, at round eight of the Bennetts British Superbike Championship at Cadwell Park. Ryde won two of the three featured races.
On Saturday for race one, Ryde finished 0.791 of a second ahead of Lee Jackson, on the MasterMac Honda. The two had some breathing room over third-place Charlie Nesbitt, Jackson’s teammate, who was three seconds back.
Honda Racing UK’s Tommy Bridewell was fourth and Hager PBM Ducati’s Glenn Irwin was fifth, the two finishing within two-tenths of a second of one another.
“I carried as much consistency as I could throughout the race. At one point I thought that my lap timer and dashboard had got stuck as I kept doing the same lap time!
“I’m buzzing really, after getting second twice last year, I think I deserved a win,” Ryde said. “It feels surreal. I didn’t think I’d be on the podium after Friday night, I was so far behind, it was a bit scary. But I made a big step in qualifying, which put me on the front row, and with Ryan [Vickers] and Tommy [Bridewell] not really setting a lap time, I knew I had to try and make the most of it and get as many points back as possible. But after the start to the weekend, I’m over the moon just to be [standing] here talking to you, the win is just a massive bonus.”
Following Sunday’s bank holiday, racing resumed Monday, August 26, for races two and three.
Bridewell came out swinging in Monday’s race two. After 12 laps of racing, Bridewell successfully defended his lead, taking the checkers 0.219 of a second ahead of Saturday’s winner Ryde. Jackson, Nesbitt and Irwin went 3-4-5.
In the third and final race, Ryde eventually took command and won by more than half a second over Bridewell. Jackson was third, followed by Nesbitt and Irwin.
“From what started off as a bit of a struggle, it ended up being pretty easy, which weekends like that don’t come very often but when they do, you have to take the most from them,” said Ryde. “I would’ve liked to have taken all three wins, but when it’s 12 laps, everyone is pushing to the limit, and the risk wasn’t quite worth it going wrong.
“The last race was probably the best race I’ve done. I was consistent and only made one mistake in the 20 laps. I got as many trophies as I could, and was crowned Bennetts Rider of the Round.”
With three rounds still to go, Bridewell is still leading the championship by 19 points over Ryde. Irwin is holding down third 41 points back but only three points ahead of Christian Iddon.CN
