Good starts for Yamaha of Troy and FMF Honda Riders
(Mitch Friedman photo)
In this week’s Throwback we dial back the time machine 24 years to the year 2000. In May of that year Glen Helen Raceway opened the outdoor national season and with Ricky Carmichael moving up to the 250cc class, the 125cc class was wide open. It was anyone’s guess as to who would end the day atop the podium. This photo shows the start of one of the motos that day. Yamaha of Troy’s Ernesto Fonseca (No. 28) and Stephane Roncada (No. 26) got great starts, as did FMF Honda’s Brock Sellards (No. 18) and Danny Smith (No. 32). Also clearly visible in the Mitch Friedman photo are Casey Lytle (No. 30), Robbie Horton (No. 61), Travis Preston (No. 34), Paul Currie (No. 38) and Michael Craig (No. 43). And who stepped up post-RC? It was Frenchman Roncada scoring a 1-2 to earn the overall that day ahead of Tallon Vohland and Steve Lamson. Roncada earned the victory despite reporting that he ate too much between motos.
