Rounds 12 and 13 of the AMA Arenacross Championship returned to Florida for a doubleheader weekend inside the Ocean Center Convention Center in Daytona Beach, Florida, March 8-9. The series added to the excitement of Bike Week as three unique winners crossed the line during the weekend’s four main events. In the end, Kyle Peters and Ryan Breece split overall wins as the championship comes down to the wire.
The sandy racecourse wreaked havoc for the riders one week prior, which is why Peters jumped up to the larger 450cc machine for this weekend’s race. The choice for Peters paid off on Friday night, as the bigger CRF gave him the advantage off the start. He grabbed the lead on the opening lap and led the entirety of main one.
Izaih Clark and Joshua Boaz rounded out the box, while Breece finished off the podium in fourth.
Things didn’t play out the same for Peters in race two, as he struggled to get to the front after starting from the back row. Meanwhile, Chase Marquier bounced back from a crash in race one and took the holeshot in race two. He went uncontested in the lead position and claimed the victory in the second main event.
Chandler Baker rode a consistent race for second, with Breece sneaking into third during the final laps. Peters crossed the line seventh.
Saturday’s round 13 put Peters back up front in race one.
“I knew I had to run the 450 to get the start,” Peters said. “This track is so start-dependent. My mindset is still to race to win every time.”
Clark put up a fight against Peters but again took second ahead of Crockett Meyers. Breece struggled in race one and finished eighth.
Breece bounced back with a statement win in main number two. He led from start to finish and made back some ground on Peters before the series heads to the finale in Las Vegas. Breece is eight points down in the championship points.
“What can you do? You have bad races; just have to throw those things away and keep your head up,” Breece said. “My goal for the finale is to win. I want to come out of this thing swinging.”
Peters rebounded for second after starting from the back row, finishing one spot clear of Kyle Bitterman.
The AMA Arenacross series concludes in Las Vegas, Nevada, on March 29. CN
