Triumph will revamp the iconic Daytona name in a new sportbike aimed at the burgeoning middleweight category.
Using the Trident 660 as its base the new Daytona will take on bikes such as the Yamaha YZF-R7 and Aprilia RS660, although unlike the rest of the category, will do so with a three-cylinder engine.
Triumph’s new Daytona will produce a claimed 17 percent more power and nine percent more torque than the Trident 660. The company is claiming a very healthy 93 hp at 12,250 rpm and 50 lb-ft of torque at 9250 rpm, with 80 percent of that torque available at 3125 rpm.
The Trident motor has come in for fairly serious revision to achieve those numbers, with a new forward mounted intake, three new 44 mm throttle bodies, new cylinder head, longer lift and higher duration camshafts, revised pistons, crankshaft and bearings all being fitted.
The six-speed gearbox has also come in for revision, with a shorter first, second, and third gear, the same fourth gear, and a taller fifth and sixth gear now present for a higher top speed. There will also be an optional Triumph up and down quickshifter as part of the accessory catalogue.
The electronics include three riding/ECU modes of Sport, Road and Rain modes, with traction control and ABS levels integrated into the ECU modes. This will also be the first Triumph that features emergency braking warning, which flashes the indicators to warn other motorists of you coming sliding into the corner (hopefully fully in control). The warning system is activated once 6g has been measured under braking, so it won’t come on unless you’re really squeezing the lever.
The new Daytona is a far cry from the ultra-focused 675/765 Daytonas that led the supersport categories for the best part of 15 years, with more relaxed ergonomics enabling what Triumph hopes will be a more comfortable ride on the street.
Again, using the Trident as the base, the handlebars have been pushed forward 95 mm and down 10 mm while also being rotated six degrees closer to the rider. The footpegs are also up 10mm and back 15mm in relation to the Trident.
The suspension consists of unadjustable 41mm Showa Big Piston Fork units offering 110mm of wheel travel, while the rear runs a Showa RSU with preload adjustment and 130 mm of wheel travel.
Triumph representatives were asked during the press unveil why they fitted unadjustable front suspension and only preload adjustability on the rear shock, and they noted the price point of $9195 MSRP meant fitting higher-spec suspension was off the cards.
This will be partially fixed by the news Triumph will be offering a race kit developed with Peter Hickman Racing that includes Bitubo fork internals and shock, race bodywork, a new subframe, race seat, rearsets, clip-ons, race ECU and the wiring loom to go with it.
There will also be over 30 new accessories offered by Triumph including luggage, crash knobs, and bling bits like slimmer indicators, plus a low seat option that takes it from the standard 810 mm to a very low 775 mm.
Brakes come in the form of dual four-piston radial-mount calipers clamping 310 mm discs, a single piston caliper on the rear and Michelin Pilot Power 6 tires keep everything on the straight and narrow.
Triumph is offering a 10,000 mile/16,000km service interval with the new Daytona 660, including a two-year unlimited mile warranty.
