Repsol Honda’s Toni Bou clinched his 17th consecutive TrialGP victory after winning the first day of the French TrialGP, in Vertolaye, September 2-3. The Belgian went on to finish the championship with another win on Sunday. He closes out the 2023 TrialGP Championship with 11 wins and 271 points, 35 points clear of his nearest rival, GasGas rider Jaime Busto, who was second on both days in France.
Bou’s teammate Gabriel Marcelli was third on both days and third in the championship.
“I am very happy to win the title with a victory,” Bou said after clinching the title following Saturday’s win. “It has been a very difficult year, with a difficult start in which Jaime Busto made it very tough for us. But we have achieved another title in the best way, with a victory, so I want to thank the team. As I always say, it would be impossible to maintain this level without all their support and effort.”
Busto was the only rider who could keep any kind of pressure on Bou throughout the year. The Spainard won a few rounds early in the season before Bou crept away.
“I am really happy because this weekend I was feeling at one with the bike and was able to put in two good performances,” Busto said. “I tried to push Toni hard, but he wasn’t fading or throwing away any marks. In the end, I got two second-place results, which is fine, and I have finished second in the championship.
“I am happy with this year. It was a new team and new bike for me, so in some ways, I wasn’t expecting such good results so quickly. To be able to get some wins and put pressure on Toni is incredible for me, and I can’t thank the team enough.”
Fourth in the championship went to Beta’s Matteo Grattoraola who finished out the year 14 points ahead of TRRS rider Adam Raga.
Next on the schedule is the Trial des Nations in France, September 8-10.CN
