The endlessly deep sands of Lommel served as round 13 of the FIM Motocross World Championship, July 22-23. Romain Febvre claimed his fourth consecutive overall win in the MXGP division, while Jago Geerts swept the MX2 class.

Jeremy Seewer kicked things off with the holeshot in race one, sprinting ahead of his Yamaha-mounted teammate and sand specialist Glenn Coldenhoff. Febvre started third but moved his way into the lead after a mistake from Coldenhoff. From there it was smooth sailing for the Kawasaki rider, who continued his momentum into another race victory. The win allowed Febvre to cut the points gap to under 100 behind Prado. Coldenhoff held on for second while Prado made the move for third on the final lap.
Race two looked similar with Seewer out front and Prado close behind. Race-one winner, Febvre, found himself buried in the pack outside the top 20. Prado made the most of his rival’s misfortune and moved to the lead by the end of lap one. Febvre continued to charge for the entire moto and worked his way all the way up to second by the checkered flag. A 1-2 scorecard gave Febvre the advantage in the overall rankings ahead of Prado and Coldenhoff.
“It was again a great weekend, as I felt really good on the bike and the track since Saturday,” Febvre said. “The new layout made it more technical, which helped to make the difference. The first race was good as I made a comfortable gap at the front to win the race. In the second race, after the bad start, I worked some magic in the sand with a good pace until the end. I was exhausted in the end so I could not catch Prado.”
MX2
Geerts is a man on a mission as he looks to cut down his points deficit. He made the most of his weekend with a perfect sweep of the qualifying race and both MX2 motos in front of his home-country fans. With these three race victories, and mistakes from both rivals Kay De Wolf and Andrea Adamo, Geerts solidifies himself second in the championship and is now just 13 down from Adamo.
“I couldn’t be happier with 60 points in front of my home fans,” said Geerts. “It was a really nice weekend; the track was tough, but I enjoyed every seconds out there. It is also looking good for the Championship, and I have to continue like this for the next races.”
Lucas Coenen’s first time to the sand as a professional was a success as he claimed second with two second-place race finishes. The Belgian was the highest placing Husqvarna in the field as his teammate De Wolf didn’t finish either moto. He crashed out of race one and didn’t return.
Simon Laengenfelder also ran a consistent day with two thirds. The GasGas rider finished third overall.
Adamo’s day didn’t go to plan as he finished seventh overall. Crashes in both races minimized his efforts with 4-13 finishes. The red-plate holder watched his points lead dwindle to just 13 over Geerts. CN
