Edwards Withstood Early Pressure from Jimmy Filice to Score Victory at Texas World
In this week’s Throwback we wind back the clock 31 years and travel to Texas World Speedway in College Station, Texas. It was the final round of the 1992 AMA 250cc Grand Prix Championship. This photo shows first-lap action with 18-year-old Colin Edwards, riding his Southwest Motorsports Yamaha, leading a talented field that included Robbie Petersen (No. 16), Jimmy Filice (behind Petersen), Rich Oliver (No. 97), Jim Sabin (No. 61), Chris D’Aluisio (No. 2), Jon Cornwell (No. 49) and others. Edwards overcame an early race challenge by veteran racer and defending series champ Filice on his Commonwealth Honda. Filice fought hard and led briefly, but Edwards was too strong throughout the 28-lap event and went on stretch out his lead late and won by over nine seconds from Filice and D’Aluisio. It marked the fifth win of the season in the nine-race series for Edwards and earned him the championship, establishing him as the top up-and-coming racer in America.
