The sweet sounds of two-strokes filled the air at Glen Helen Raceway for the Wiseco 2-Stroke World Championship. Gates were full of both modern and retro builds as the nostalgia and premix burned hot. Carson Brown took home top honors in the Open Pro division as he bested Ryan Surratt and Trevor Stewart with 2-1 results.
After a nasty crash red-flagged the first Open Pro moto right off the start, it was former Supercross pro Preston Tilford grabbing the early lead. He took control for the first few laps, as do-it-all racer Surratt clawed his way up from a top-five start. The JCR Honda rider (Surratt) took control of the lead by lap four and held the top spot through the end of the 20-minute-plus-one-lap race.
Brown put in a strong charge late in the race as he made his way into second. The YZ300-mounted rider, Brown, got close to Surratt but ultimately finished 1.49 seconds back. Deegan Vonlossberg led laps early in race one and held off Stewart for the third spot. Brown put himself up front off the start in moto two and was tailed closely by the defending champ, Stewart. Brown went on to lead every lap of the second moto, and his 2-1 scores earned him the day’s overall.
Surratt’s start in moto two didn’t do him any favors, as he again had to charge from behind. He passed into second by the halfway point and stayed close to Brown’s rear wheel but never managed to make a pass stick. Surratt came home second overall. Stewart finished third in the second moto after being stuck in second and third gears. His 4-3 scores gave him third overall.
Other notable classes included the 125 Pros, where KTM’s lead test rider, Ryan Morais, took the overall ahead of Josh Mosiman and Mike Alessi. These three all traded race wins and podium finishes.
Morais, Alessi and Mike Brown again battled for the 30-Plus 125cc Pro division with Alessi coming out on top with 1-2 finishes. The number-800 of Alessi topped Brown’s 4-1 and Morais’ 2-3 results.
Brown got redemption in the 50-Plus 125 Pro class, as he swept both motos for the undisputed overall win. Behind him, Doug Dubach and Alan Jullian traded positions with Dubach finishing second and Jullian third in the overall. CN
