Throwback Thursday: Steve Morehead Tops Lima AMA SuperTracker Podium (1999)

43-year-old veteran Morehead outdid youngsters Joe Kopp and Mike Hacker for the win
Playwright David Mamet was once famously quoted as saying “Old age and treachery will always overcome youth and exuberance.” While that usually doesn’t apply in the world of motorcycle racing, the adage rang true at the Lima (Ohio) Half-Mile AMA/SuperTrapp SuperTracker Series race on the cushion track at the Allen County Fairgrounds in June of 1999. In that race 43-year-old veteran racer Steve Morehead used a little treachery to make a last-lap pass on a young Joe Kopp to secure the victory. It was the first cushion track race for the production-based SuperTracker machines and on the final lap of the main Morehead stuffed his Suzuki inside going into turn three and then as the pair went through turn four nearly side by side, Morehead intentionally drifted up high exiting the final turn, forcing Kopp to check up. That was all the margin he needed, and Morehead scored the victory. Kopp was second on another Suzuki, while Mike Hacker took third on a Harley XL-based machine. This is the podium photo with (l to r) Hacker, Morehead and Kopp.
