The final three rounds of the AMA West Hare Scrambles (WHS) Regional Championship Series, Presented by MojoMotoSport, will be do-or-die time for the championship hopefuls.

However, 3 Bros./Kilmartin Racing GasGas rider Giacomo Redondi took a huge step closer to that championship goal at round five when he secured a last-lap win over 3 Bros./Hatch Racing Husqvarna’s Dalton Shirey and Carson City Motorsports KTM-mounted Austin Serpa, the defending series champ.
Eight points ahead of LiquiMoly Beta’s Zane Roberts going into the race at the Owyhee Motorcycle Club (OMC) facility, 94-86, Redmond’s triumph, coupled with an unfortunate technical problem for Roberts, saw that margin grow to 124-100.
Unlike the previous round in Bellingham, Washington, in June, the hot, dry summer dictated extremely dry, dusty conditions at OMC, so much so that the Sunday morning race had to be red-flagged and course rerouted when one big sand hill became practically impassable due to white-out conditions in the dust. In the afternoon race, there was no red flag, but another hill had to be cut out because of no visibility in the silt. Even running out front was no guarantee of clean air with the Pro leaders on the second lap encountering lappers.
After getting a good start on his Acerbis/Dunlop/Seven-backed EX 450F, Redondi enjoyed leading for over an hour before newly crowned AMA Hare & Hound National Champion Shirey made his way to the front.
FMF/P-Works/Troy Lee Designs FX 450-mounted Shirey led for most of the last hour and a half, stretching his lead to nearly two minutes at one point. However, he began to falter in the closing stages.
“I was being a wuss and started throwing up,” Shirey explained. With several riders complaining of ingesting massive quantities of dust and silt, that’s not surprising.
“The last three or four laps, I saw that I was gaining [on Shirey]; every lap I was gaining more and more so I say [to myself], ‘Go for it!” Redondi shared. “The last lap, he was super-tired and I was feeling very good so I think I did my best lap time on the last lap.
“I’m pretty happy. Also, Zane had an issue on the bike, but he was super-lucky [after being down a lap] and got fourth place [Pro] so we are still in the championship [battle], but with two rounds to go, I don’t have an idea what the points are. I just want to take as many wins as I can and see at the end of the year [how it turns out].”
This has been a frustrating season for Serpa, the current series champ unable to replicate last year’s successes. In fact, he hadn’t even podiumed until OMC.
“It’s a bummer; I felt like I got [third] kind of handed to me by others’ misfortune, but I’ll take it,” he declared. “Two more rounds, I’d like to get two more podiums. This year’s been pretty tough. I don’t ride like I practice so I’m trying to work on that.”
Americool/TBT Racing/Answer YZ250F rider Jaden Dahners topped the Pro 250s for the first time, finishing fourth overall in the process. In fact, fourth, fifth and sixth overall were all Pro 250s with DC Yamaha’s Mason Ottersberg rebounding from a last-place start on his Precision Concepts/Rocket Exhaust/Pure Adrenaline YZ250FX for class runner-up and fifth overall, four seconds ahead of MojoMotoSport/Six Five O Racing/Fasthouse KTM 250 XC-F rider Anthony Ferrante. In addition, Ferrante was the last rider on the lead lap.
Points-wise, Ottersberg enjoys a comfortable lead over Ferrante, 124-92. One point back of Ferrante, thanks to his win, is Dahners.
Things were going well for Zane Roberts for just over an hour as he held a strong third place, but when his FMF/Dunlop/Klim 480 RR balked at the far end of the course, he lost at least a lap getting it pushed back to the pits and repaired. Officially 19th nearly 90 minutes in, he clawed his way back to seventh overall and fourth Pro, salvaging precious points.
DC Yamaha’s Jack Anderson set a consistent pace to earn eighth overall, fourth Pro 250, ahead of Open A winner Dallas Serpa on his Carson City Motorsports GasGas. Pro 250 rider Seven Diaz rounded out the top 10 overall on his Modesto KTM.
O’Neal GasGas rider Devin Watson took Vet Pro 35+ for the third time this season, finishing 17th overall, James McMurray the class runner-up on his RMS KTM at 35th overall.
In the morning race, 3 Bros./Kilmartin Racing GasGas-mounted Ava Silvestri took advantage of the red-flag restart to snatch the lead on the second lap and chalk up her third consecutive victory aboard her Blud Lubricants/Factory Connection/Troy Lee Designs EX 250F. Coupled with defending champ Kaitlyn Jacobs slipping to fourth on her FMF/RPM Racing KTM, Silvestri commands the points over Jacobs, 141-123.
Let’s Ride KTM-backed Ashley Gage had a great day, getting the holeshot on the restart and riding that to a career-best runner-up finish. Full Factory KTM’s Rachel Stout ended up third for the third time this season and holds third in class points.
