Motocross fans were treated to another exciting day of racing with four different moto winners. In the 450MX class, Ken Roczen took advantage of a last lap second moto crash from his teammate Chase Sexton to take the moto and overall win on the HRC Honda. In the 250MX class, Levi Kitchen won the first moto and Hunter Lawrence won moto two but Jett Lawrence took his third overall in three races with 2-2 moto scores.
450MX
Antonio Cairoli took his third his second holeshot in a row to get moto one started. Ken Roczen quickly took over the lead and opened a gap. Last week’s winner Jason Anderson was closest to Roczen but Eli Tomac was on the move and he eventually caught and passed Sexton, Anderson and Roczen to take the moto win. Roczen held on for second ahead of Anderson. Sexton finished fourth in the moto and Cairoli held onto fifth.
The second moto start was almost a replay of moto one with Cairoli taking the holeshot ahead of Roczen. Roczen again made a quick pass for the lead and opened a gap that he held until Sexton took over the lead after passing Tomac and closing the gap on Roczen. Tomac closed to the back of Roczen and pressured him for several laps but could not make a pass stick.
With his 1-3 scores enough for the overall with Roczen in second, Tomac settled for third with two laps to go. Sexton appeared to be on his way to the moto win until a small crash on the final lap allowed Roczen to slip by for the moto and overall win via 2-1 moto finishes. Tomac finished third in the moto and second overall. Sexton finished third overall via 4-2 moto finishes.
250MX
Star Racing Yamaha Rider Levi Kitchen took the first moto holeshot with his teammate Justin Cooper in second. Jett Lawrence quickly moved into second place but Kitchen pulled out a four second gap that he held for several laps. At the mid-point o the moto, Jett closed the gap but Kitchen picked up the pace and opened it back up and eventually took the moto win ahead of Jett Lawrence. Cooper held onto third in the moto ahead of Hunter Lawrence, who had to work his way up from a poor start. Monster Energy Kawasaki rider Seth Hammaker rounded out the top five in moto one.
In moto two, Hunter Lawrence got a rare holeshot with his brother Jett on his tail. Jett was briefly passed by Justin Cooper but Jett took the spot back and the two Lawrence brothers rode the rest of the moto in formation. Cooper closed back in on Lawrence at the finish for another third-place moto score. Jett Lawrence took the overall via 2-2 moto finishes. The 4-1 scores for Hunter Lawrence earned him second overall.
Michael Mosiman finished the second moto in fourth. The GasGas TLD rider was the fastest 250MX qualifier, but two crashes held him back to 13th in moto one. Moto one winner Kitchen recovered from a first lap crash to take fifth in the second moto and edge out Cooper for his first ever overall podium in third overall.
