Evans Charged from the Back of the Grid to Score Victory
In this week’s Throwback Thursday, we wind the clock back 50 years to the AMA Junior class road race at the Loudon Classic in June of 1972. In that race Evans noticed as he sat on the grid, that his Mel Dinesen Yamaha had no fuel. His crew set off frantically to grab some gas. The one-minute board was displayed, and Evans was forced to move from his front-row starting spot all the way to the back of the grid. His crew arrived and fueled his bike with no time to spare, before the drop of the green flag. With his adrenalin already flowing, Evans charged through the field at such a rate that he passed early leader Jim Chen before the halfway flags. Evans (center) took the victory, followed by Chen (left) and Jeff March (right).
