Round two of the FIM Motocross World Championship, the MXGP of Lombardia in Mantova, Italy, March 6, saw Honda’s Tim Gajser and Yamaha’s Jago Geerts taking top honors in their respective classes. Gajser maintained his lead in the MXGP Championship, Geerts came away with the red plate in MX for the first time since 2020.
Gajser claimed the overall win with 2-1 motos. Red Bull KTM’s Jorge Prado started up front as usual with Gajser in tow. The two rode toe-to-toe for nearly the entire moto with Prado eventually taking the win. Gajser came close on multiple occasions but never managed to make a pass stick.
MXGP rookie Maxime Renaux, on the Monster Energy Yamaha, took third.
Gajser quickly jumped to the front at the start of race two, while Prado got squeezed out on the start line. This put him back in the pack, while Gajser took the lead and would never let go of it.
Prado made his way up to fourth at one point but suffered a crash late in the race. The Spaniard would eventually finish seventh, his 1-7 tally resulting in third overall.
Renaux had another solid outing, taking the checkered flag seven seconds behind Gajser for second overall.
Husqvarna’s Brian Bogers went 7-3 for fourth overall, while Yamaha’s Jeremy Seewer rounded out the top five with a 4-5.
After two rounds, Gajser maintains the points lead, 12 over Prado and 17 over Renaux.
In the MX2 division, Geerts went undefeated. The Belgian ran off with the moto-one victory but had to make some passes before winning moto two.
Red Bull KTM’s Tom Vialle of France took second in moto one and was leading moto two when his suffered a spectacular get-off after being ejected off his bike over a jump. Amazingly, he was not seriously injured and eventually went on to finish 21st in the moto.
GasGas rider Andrea Adamo of Italy finished out the day second overall and on the podium for the first of his career after going 4-3, while Holland’s Kay de Wolf (Husqvarna) filled out the podium with a 3-4.
De Wolf battled hard with Simon Langenfelder late in race two but contact on the final lap put the Dutchman on the ground.
Round-one winner Langenfelder fought his way to second in race two but was off the podium in the overall classification. Poor starts hindered the GasGas rider all day and fourth overall drops him to second in the series points.
He is third overall in the point standings. CN
