2022 Dakar Rally Motorcycle Results—Stage 12
Sam Sunderland is the 2022 Dakar Rally Champion after finishing eighth on the final stage, a short 164 km run from Bisha to the Saudi city of Jedda.
Sunderland was almost seven minutes up on Honda’s Pablo Quintanilla going into Stage 12, and the Chilean did all he could in a last gasp effort to overtake Sunderland by winning the stage, but Sunderland held on with the final margin of victory being 3m27s after over 38 hours of racing. It was the closest margin of victory since Edi Oriloi’s win over Jordi Acarons in 1994.
The win marks Sunderland’s second in Dakar competition, a first for GASGAS and a first for the KTM Group in Saudi Arabia following two straight wins by Honda.
“Wow. What a feeling!,” Sunderland said at the end of the stage. “That 10-minute period waiting at the end of the final stage to see if I’d won felt like a lifetime. But this feeling, knowing I’ve won a second Dakar, will stay in my memory forever. This win feels better than the first as this victory was anything but easy. The times were so close this year and there was no time to let off the gas, it was a really close race, right to the end. All of the hard work, the sacrifices, and everything that the GASGAS team has done for me make it all worthwhile. It’s been five years since my first Dakar win, and it’s been a long time to wait! I’m super happy to get another win and claim the first one for GASGAS.”
Third in the overall standings went to Red Bull KTM’s 2018 race winner Matthias Walkner, an eventual 06m47s behind former teammate Sunderland.
Sunderland’s brother-in-law Adrien van Beveren (Yamaha) and Joan Barreda (Honda), and Jose Ignacio Conejo (Honda) rounded out the top six.
Seventh for the rally was comeback king Ricky Brabec (Honda). Although the American was without a stage win, Brabec’s Dakar was an impressive one after losing nearly an hour on Stage 1B to lie 22nd. Brabec came home ahead of Yamaha’s consistent Andrew Short, with Mason Klein (KTM) putting in an exceptional debut Dakar result by clinching ninth and finishing one place ahead of two-time Dakar Champion, Toby Price (KTM).
Price narrowly missed the Stage 12 victory, Quintanilla grabbing the gold by just 18 seconds. Cornejo was a further 11 seconds back in third for the day ahead of Barreda, Klein, Luciano Benavides (Husqvarna, +02m38s), Walkner (+02m57s), Sunderland (+03m25s), Lorenzo Santolino (Sherco, +04m18s), and Diego Gamaliel Llanos taking his first top 10 of the 2022 Dakar Rally on his KTM, 04m35s off Quintanilla.

2022 Dakar Rally Motorcycle Results—Stage 11
Sam Sunderland is back in the lead of the 2022 Dakar Rally following a dramatic Stage 11 in which Kevin Benavides (KTM) took the win.
Sunderland went into Stage 11’s 346 km loop around Bisha in treacherous soft sand dunes trailing Yamaha’s Adrien van Beveren by nearly six minutes but consistent navigation errors for the French star saw him drop a shattering 15m30s off the Rally lead to fourth overall.
Sunderland’s second place on the stage, a mere four seconds behind Benavides, who yesterday suffered race-ending mechanical dramas but due to the rules was allowed to race the rest of the rally with a 15-hour time penalty, means the 2017 Dakar Champion is in the box seat heading into tomorrow’s final stage with 06m52s lead over Honda’s Pablo Quintanilla.
Third on Stage 10 went to Hero Motorsports’ Stage 3 victor Joaquim Rodrigues.
Leader after Stage 9, Matthias Walkner’s fourth place on Stage 11 sees the Austrian drop to third on the overall leaderboard, 07m15s behind Sunderland.
Fifth for Stage 11 went to Honda’s Ricky Brabec from Quintanilla, Jose Ignacio Cornejo (Honda), French Dakar rookie Romain Dumontier (Husqvarna), Yamaha’s Andrew Short, and Stefan Svitko (KTM) rounding out the top 10.
Stage 10 winner Toby Price (KTM) had the unenviable task of opening today’s stage. An issue early on where a waypoint didn’t validate correctly put him on the back foot for the rest of the special and he finished down in 28th, 30m47s off teammate Benavides. The Australian drops from sixth to 10th with one stage remaining, 52m27s off Sunderland.
With one stage to go the order is Sunderland, Quintanilla, Walkner, van Beveren, Joan Barreda (Honda, 21st today), Brabec, Cornejo, Short, American Mason Klein (KTM, 11th today), and Price.

2022 Dakar Rally Motorcycle Results—Stage 10
Adrien van Beveren (Yamaha) has moved back into the lead of the 2022 Dakar Rally with two stages to run following a third-place on Stage 9’s 375 km route from Wadi Ad Dawasir to Bisha.
The Frenchman originally clocked the fourth-fastest time behind stage winner Toby Price, but a speeding penalty for Honda’s Pablo Quintanilla and Joan Barreda elevated him onto the stage podium.
It was a disastrous day for former Rally leader Sam Sunderland (GasGas), the Briton losing 11m18s to Price and dropping to second overall, 05m59s off his brother-in-law van Beveren.
Quintanilla moves into third place overall after KTM’s 2021 Dakar Champion Kevin Benavides was forced to retire following a mechanical issue.
Matthias Walkner drops from the Rally lead to fourth, 08m24s behind, after losing over 15 minutes with navigational problems to finish the day way down in 26th.
For Price, it was his first stage win on the 2022 Dakar after losing his Stage 5 victory due to speeding. The Australian now moves into the top six, 27m43s off the Rally lead, and ahead of Americans Andrew Short (Yamaha) in seventh, Mason Klein (KTM) in eighth, and 2020 Dakar Champion Ricky Brabec in ninth.
Behind Price, Luciano Benavides (Husqvarna) took second on Stage 9 from van Beveren, Lorenzo Santolino and Short. Stefan Svitko (KTM), Maciej Giemza (KTM), Rui Goncalves (Sherco), Barreda, and Martin Michek (KTM) rounded out the stage’s top 10.
Klein and Brabec finished 12th and 15th, respectively.
In the overall, van Beveren holds the lead from Sunderland, Quintanilla, Walkner and Barreda, with Price (+27m43s), Short (+33m57s), Klein (+37m49s), Brabec (+38m05s), and Jose Ignacio Cornejo (Honda, +39m00s) rounding out the top 10.
There are two stages left on the 2022 Dakar and everything is still to play for.

2022 Dakar Rally Motorcycle Results—Stage 9
Jose Ignacio Cornejo (Honda) took his second stage victory on the 2022 Dakar Rally with his Stage 9 triumph.
The Chilean battled throughout the 287km test near Wadi Ad Dawasir with factory Honda teammate Ricky Brabec, the American leading until the fourth waypoint when Cornejo overhauled the American to retake the lead.
Cornejo would eventually come home 1m26s ahead of KTM’s former champion Kevin Benavides, with Brabec slipping to third on the stage, 01m47s back, but he’s now in the overall top 10.
Stage 9 marked another change in the overall leaderboard as KTM’s Matthias Walkner took over at the top with his fourth-place finish. Leading going into Stage 9, Sam Sunderland (GasGas) opened the road but the usual issues of navigation that befalls the first rider on track hit the Briton and he dropped to 13th for the day. The result puts him 02m12s behind former teammate Walkner with three stages remaining.
Honda’s Joan Barreda came home fifth on Stage 9, one place up on the consistent Andrew Short (Yamaha), whose sixth place on the stage has knocked KTM’s Toby Price back to ninth overall.
Rounding out the Stage 9 top 10 was Luciano Benavides (Husqvarna), Pablo Quintanilla (Honda), Yamaha’s Adrien van Beveren and Maciej Giemza (KTM).
American Mason Klein came home 12th on his KTM.
Overall, Walkner leads from Sunderland and van Beveren, Quintanilla and Kevin Benavides, with Barreda (+10m57s), Cornejo (+32m30s), Short (+34m59s), Price (+35m14s), and Brabec (+35m54s) to round out the top 10. Klein drops out of the top 10 to 11th, 37m24s back.

2022 Dakar Rally Motorcycle Results—Stage 8
Sam Sunderland has struck back in emphatic fashion by winning Stage 8 of the 2022 Dakar Rally to retake the lead in the overall standings by 03m45s over KTM’s Matthias Walkner.
The Briton led at every waypoint of the 395 km Al Dawadimi to Wadi Ad Dawasir stage, winning by 02m53s over Honda’s Pablo Quintanilla with Walkner taking third.
“That was a really challenging stage today,” Sunderland said. “There was a lot of sand early on but then near the end, there were a lot of canyons to navigate through. You had to be really patient and choose the right one as it would be so easy to get lost and lose time. The guys opening, fortunately, did a great job, which made things a little easier for me but after leading out yesterday, I know how tough that can be. Early on I was pushing hard and I was a bit too aggressive with a few small crashes in the sand so I had to settle down a bit, get into a rhythm, and it paid off as I was able to take the stage win. We have some long days ahead, but today’s result is just what I needed after everything that happened yesterday.”
Ricky Brabec banked another top-five finish in fourth to move up to 13th in the overall standings while Mason Klein’s stellar Dakar debut continues as the Californian finished fifth on the stage, 08m08s off Sunderland to move into 10th overall.
Stage 8 was a better one for KTM’s Toby Price. The two-time Dakar champion has endured a torrid time in Saudi Arabia so far, a second-place on Stage 3 his best result of the Rally so far. The Australian came home sixth on Stage 8 and now sits ninth in the standings.
Seventh on Stage 8 was Luciano Benavides (Husqvarna) ahead of Joaquim Rodrigues (Hero).
For Frenchman Adrien van Beveren, he had a day to forget as he slipped from the overall lead going into Stage 8 to third, 04m43s off Sunderland after finishing the stage in ninth, 10m21s off the Briton’s pace.
Rounding out the Stage 8 top 10 is Joan Barreda (Honda), 11m43s from Sunderland. The Spaniard is still suffering the effects of a crash on Stage 5 that smashed his shoulder but is soldiering on and now lies fifth in the overall classification.

2022 Dakar Rally Motorcycle Results—Stage 7
Yamaha’s Adrien van Beveren is the new leader of the 2022 Dakar Rally following a drama-filled Stage 7, the 402 km special from Riyadh to Al Dawadimi.
Van Beveren, 10th on Stage 7, took over the lead of the event after erstwhile leader Sam Sunderland (GasGas) lost a massive 25m55s to Stage 7 winner Jose Ignacio Cornejo (Honda), who notched up his first triumph of the 2022 Dakar ahead of KTM’s defending champion Kevin Benavides and Honda teammate Joan Barreda. Luciano Benavides (Husqvarna) and Lorenzo Santolino (Sherco) and Joaquim Rodrigues (Her) rounded out the stage’s top six.
Ricky Brabec was the first of the Americans home in seventh, 09m49s off teammate Cornejo. He bested compatriot Andrew Short (Yamaha) in eighth, two-time Rally winner Toby Price (KTM) in ninth and new Rally leader van Beveren in 10th, 12m34s off Cornejo. Mason Klein (KTM) continues his impressive debut Dakar, taking 13th on Stage 7 to sit 12th overall heading into Stage 8.
Three-time stage winner in 2022, Daniel Sanders, is out of the event following a crash on the liaison part of the stage. The Australian fractured his left arm and wrist in the crash and was taken to hospital, with surgery expected tomorrow (January 10).
The departure of Sanders meant Sunderland is now the sole GasGas representative, and his 28th place finish after managing the event so well leading up to Stage 7 will no doubt be a huge obstacle to overcome.
Van Beveren, who has yet to win a stage of the 2022 Dakar Rally, is now the overall leader by 05m12s from KTM’s Matthias Walkner, Kevin Benavides (+05m23s), Sunderland (+05m38s), Santolino (+06m34s), Honda’s Pablo Quintanilla (+08m15s), Barreda (+08m33s), KTM’s Stefan Svitko (+20m18s), Stage 7 winner Cornejo (+26m37s) and Short (+28m10s), the leading American, rounding out the top 10.

2022 Dakar Rally Motorcycle Results—Stage 6
Daniel Sanders (GasGas) took his third stage win of the 2022 Dakar Rally, with only 101 km of the scheduled 421 km loop around the Saudi capital of Riyadh covered. Organizers cited poor track conditions as a result of the cars, trucks, and side-by-side contingent using the same course layout yesterday on Stage 5, an area that also suffered heavy overnight rain and making racing too treacherous.
The cancelation of the stage came too late for Stage 5 winner Danilo Petrucci (KTM) and Yamaha’s Ross Branch. Petrucci led the field from the start but at the 3 km mark crashed, suffering abrasions to his shoulder but he was able to continue to finish in 40th place. Branch wasn’t so lucky, crashing out of the remainder of the rally.
Sanders dominated the stage, leading at each waypoint to finish 2m26s up on teammate and Rally leader Sam Sunderland. KTM’s Matthias Walkner was third for the stage and cements second in the overall standings behind Sunderland, 2m39s back.
Placing third coming into today’s stage, Adrien van Beveren (Yamaha) slipped to fourth in the overall standings after carding an eighth-place finish on Stage 6.
Fourth on Stage 6 went to Honda’s Pablo Quintanilla from teammate Ricky Brabec, the first American home. The day’s top 10 was rounded out by American rookie Mason Klein (KTM), Stefan Svitko (KTM), van Beveren, Red Bull KTM’s Toby Price, and Hero Motorsport’s Joaquim Rodrigues. The remaining American, Andrew Short (Yamaha) took 16th on stage.
In the overall standings, Sunderland leads from Walkner with Sanders jumping up to third, 5m35s off Sunderland. Van Beveren slips to fourth from Quintanilla, Lorenzo Santolino (Sherco, 13th on Stage 6), Svitko, Kevin Benavides (KTM, 15th on Stage 6), Joan Barreda (Honda, 14th on Stage 6), and Mason Klein. Short sits 11th while Brabec is 15th.
Tomorrow (January 8) is a rest day and racing action will resume on Sunday, January 9.

2022 Dakar Rally Motorcycle Results—Stage 5
Danilo Petrucci (KTM) made a slice of history when he took the top spot on Stage 5 of the 2022 Dakar Rally.
The former MotoGP race winner and Dakar rookie came home second on the timesheets to former two-time Rally winner Toby Price (KTM) but was boosted to first place after Price incurred a six-minute penalty for speeding in a controlled section of the course.
Petrucci’s stage win by two seconds from Yamaha’s Ross Branch marks the first in his fledging Dakar career and the first by a former MotoGP rider in the history of the event.
The win sees Petrucci hoisted up to 47th in the overall standings after a mechanical problem on Stage 2 saw the Italian require outside assistance and thus suffer a huge time penalty that dropped him to 130th overall. He’s now 19h11m06s off race leader Sam Sunderland (GasGas).
Third on stage went to Honda’s Jose Ignacio Cornejo from teammate Ricky Brabec, with Price eventually being classified fifth, 1m46s off Petrucci.
Stage 5 saw another great performance from Mason Klein (KTM) as the American rookie came home sixth ahead of compatriot Andrew Short (Yamaha). 2021 race winner Kevin Benavides (KTM), Martin Michek (KTM), and Luciano Benavides (Husqvarna) rounded out the stage top 10.
Sunderland took 12th on the stage to retain a 2m29s lead over Matthias Walkner (KTM) with Adrien van Beveren continuing to hold third overall for the factory Yamaha team.
As for the American contingent, Short is the best placed in 11th from Klein in 12th, Ricky Brabec is 16th and Skyler Howes (Husqvarna) is out of the rally following a massive crash on Stage 5 that ruled him out of further participation with a concussion. Stage 4 winner Joan Barreda (Honda) took 25th on the stage following a crash and drops to 10th overall, 22m58s off Sunderland.

2022 Dakar Rally Motorcycle Results—Stage 4
Joan Barreda has taken the second stage win of his 2022 Dakar campaign. The Spaniard triumphed on the 464km special located between Al Qaisumah and Riyadh head of Honda’s Pablo Quintanilla, but it was Tech3 KTM’s former MotoGP star Danilo Petrucci who made the headlines with a sterling performance by leading until the first three waypoints.
Petrucci, who cannot be classified in the overall standings following a mechanical problem on Stage 2, ended the Stage third overall after Barreda caught, passed and pulled clear for a 4m37s margin of victory. It was his 29th career stage win.
Due to Petrucci not being officially classified, third on the timesheets went to Rui Goncalves, heading teammate Lorenzo Santolino in an excellent day for the Sherco TVS Rally team. Fifth was the first factory Husqvarna entry of Luciano Benavides.
GasGas’s Sam Sunderland’s sixth place means he still leads the rally overall, three minutes clear of Red Bull KTM’s Matthias Walkner, who was right behind the Briton in seventh on Stage 4. Rounding out the top 10 was Stefan Svtiko, Martin Michek and 2020 rally champion, Ricky Brabec.
Former two-time champion Toby Price had another tough day in the saddle, finishing 26th and over 26 minutes off Brabec’s pace and now lies 16th overall. Compatriot Daniel Sanders had issues with navigation and finished the stage in 17th, but is now fourth overall, 7m07s off teammate Sunderland after race organizers removed a 10-minute penalty incurred on Stage 2 following a successful appeal by his GasGas team.
With Brabec in 10th, the remaining Americans of Andrew Short, Skyler Howes and Mason Klein finished 13th, 21st and 23rd, respectively. Overall, Howes is in eighth, Short is 12th and Klein is running in 14th place.

2022 Dakar Rally Motorcycle Results—Stage 3
The 255km Stage 3 near Al Qaisumah saw Joaquim Rodrigues and the Indian manufacturer Hero take their first-ever stage wins in the Dakar Rally.
The Portuguese rider came home 1m03s ahead of two-time Dakar champion Toby Price on the Red Bull KTM, who in turn was just 11 seconds ahead of the hugely impressive American rookie Mason Klein (KTM), who scored his first Dakar stage podium in third with compatriot Skyler Howes in fourth.
Rodrigues spent much of the stage behind GasGas’s Daniel Sanders, who looked on course for his third stage victory of the 2022 campaign before losing over four minutes in the final 35km stretch to the finish. The Australian would come home in fifth for Stage 3.
It was another solid day for Andrew Short (Yamaha), who finished 3m36s behind Rodrigues and one place up on 2020 champion, Ricky Brabec (Honda), who made it four Americans in the top seven for the stage.
2021 champion Kevin Benavides (KTM), Adrien van Beveren (Yamaha) and KTM’s Matthias Walkner (KTM) rounded out the top 10.
Stage 2 winner Joan Barreda dropped over 10 minutes to the leaders to finish 24th, while Sam Sunderland was 17th after losing 7m30s to Rodrigues. Regardless, the Briton still leads the rally overall, a mere four second up on van Beveren.
Walkner holds third, 1m30s off the lead. Howes is fourth, 3m55s back and Sanders drops to fifth, 8m54s off teammate Sunderland.

2022 Dakar Rally Motorcycle Results—Stage 2
Stage two of the Dakar Rally kicked off today. Rains in the northern part of Saudi Arabia played havoc for the organizers but made for epic conditions in the sand dunes. Stage two consisted of 453 kilometers, 338.43 of that being the timed special stage.
Honda’s Joan Barreda completed the day’s special with the best time, 5:33 clear of GasGas’s Sam Sunderland. Kevin Benavides (KTM) finished third on the days stage. The Americans showed promise today with Skyler Howes (Husqvarna) placing fourth on the stage, 6:16 behind Barreda. Andrew Short also placed inside the top 10, 12:02 back. Brabec made his intentions of making up time clear, and salvaged a 15th place, 15:04 behind his Honda HRC Rally teammate. Mason Klein had a great showing in yesterdays Stage 1B, but only managed a result of 33 today.
Skyler Howes is the highest ranking American in the overall classification, fifth place and 9:59 down.

2022 Dakar Rally Motorcycle Results—Stage 1B
Stage 1B serves as the first real stage of the 2022 Dakar Rally. Today’s route is made up of over 300 timed kilometers through the treacherous Saudi dunes. Again it was GASGAS Factory Racing’s Daniel Sanders who claimed victory, his second career stage victory and his second in just two days. Sanders finished 3:07 over Pablo Quintanilla (Honda) and Matthias Walkner (KTM). The GasGas riders now has an overall lead of 2:07 over Pablo Quintanilla and 8:30 ahead of Matthias Walkner.
The rest of the field faced a troublesome morning. Many of the rally favorites had trouble finding a checkpoint near race kilometer 270 and lost around 30 minutes to an hour of overall time. Racers in this debacle included Toby Price and Ricky Brabec.
Big news for American fans as California’s Mason Klein, the youngest Dakar Rally competitor, finished fourth on Stage 1B. The BAS KTM racer logged a time of 3:51:54, 8:44 behind Sanders but just 13 seconds back from Walkner on the Factory KTM. Not a bad way to start your first Dakar.

Today marks the start of the notorious Dakar Rally. GASGAS Factory Racing’s Daniel Sanders struck first blood in the short 19km timed Stage 1A. Honda HRC’s Pablo Quintanilla finished one minute behind Sanders and Ross Branch took third on his Yamaha. The KTM’s of Kevin Benavides and Matthias Walkner rounded out day one’s top five.
