Beta’s Brad Freeman of Great Britain was crowned EnduroGP World Champion in the final day of the 2021 season in France, October 17.
Freeman came into the weekend holding a small lead over KTM’s Josep Garcia, who closed in on Freeman after topping the charts on day one, Saturday. Freeman took second and went into Sunday’s final with a 16-point advantage over Garcia.
All three of the class championships, however, were clinched on Saturday, with GasGas rider Andrea Verona taking the Enduro 1 title, Garcia the Enduro 2 crown and Freeman the Enduro 3 title. But the biggie, the overall EnduroGP Championship, had to wait another day.
Freeman got off to a fast start on Sunday, while Garcia fell in the first and second tests, the second one costing the KTM rider 20 seconds in the process.
As a result of the crashes, Garcia spent the rest of the day playing catch up, while Freeman was riding fast and steady. Garcia won three of the remaining five tests, but it wasn’t enough to catch Freeman, who was the day’s overall winner and 2021 EnduroGP Champion.
“I wanted to go for the win today to take the title,” said Freeman. “I knew ninth place would be enough to get the job done, but that’s not my style or how I like to ride, so I just went for it. With two tests to go I had a good lead and then rode it home. I’m so happy with this year and how it’s gone. I feel like there’s a massive weight lifted off my shoulders now. I’m the EnduroGP World Champion and that’s an awesome feeling!”
Laia Sanz took her EC 350F to the top of the timesheets in 11 of the 13 special tests over the weekend, making her the 2021 FIM EnduroGP Women World Champion.
Sanz’s 2021 EnduroGP Women world title, her sixth in the class, comes almost two months to the day since she won the TrialGP Women World Championship, and combined with her record-breaking finish in the Dakar Rally in January, caps off an incredible season for the legendary all-rounder.
“It’s been an amazing day,” said Sanz. “To win the world title again after being out of the sport since 2016 is special. But also, to take the Trial title in the same year is beyond my expectations. I can’t thank GasGas enough for their support in helping me achieve these goals.” CN
