This is a press release from AHRMA…
Elora, TN (July 14, 2021) — Fred Hoess, an active member of the American Historic Racing Motorcycle Association (AHRMA), is taking on the world at the International Six Days Enduro (ISDE)–for the 27th time.
The ISDE is the world’s largest annual off-road motorcycle competition. First held in Carlisle, England, in 1913, the ISDE is one of the longest-running events on the calendar of the Federation Internationale de Motocyclisme (FIM). Countries have sent their best off-road racers to locations around the world to compete on everything from sandy beaches to rocky crevices to deep woods to motocross tracks.
This year’s event is scheduled for August 30 to September 4, 2021 in Lombardy-Piedmont, Italy, which is about an hour south of Milan in Northern Italy.
“The ISDE is an event that I wanted to ride since watching On Any Sunday and meeting the Pentons,” said Hoess. “I guess it’s in my blood since this will be my 27th year to go.”
Hoess first qualified in 1984 when he was 18 and has represented the USA, riding both on the Junior World Trophy and the World Trophy teams. This year he will be riding on the Eric Cleveland Memorial club team on a 2022 Beta 250 2-Stroke Race Edition.
The last time Hoess raced Internationally was at the 2016 Inaugural Vintage Trophy Event, which was a new event FIM added to the ISDE to highlight vintage bikes and veteran riders. He prepped and shipped a 1983/4 Husqvarna 250 WR to the Circuito de Navarra, Spain where he was the only American participant to enter this race and took first overall, winning the Vintage Trophy.
“Hoess still has the speed, passion and desire to do what he does, and that is race the ISDE,” said Arthur Kowitz, Chairman of the AHRMA Board of Directors. “AHRMA wants to wish Fred the best of luck in this year’s ISDE and looks forward to riding along with him on his epic adventure.”
The ISDE competitors must do their own maintenance within a short time period everyday with no outside help, in the pits or on the trails. To qualify to compete in this event you must earn a spot on each nation’s roster through their own qualifying process, as the best each nation has to bring to the event. Earning a medal during this event be it Bronze, Silver or Gold is a crowning achievement in any off-road motorcyclist’s career.
Each country participating in the ISDE is authorized to have four riders on its the World Trophy Team, three riders age 23 or younger on its the Junior Trophy Team, three female riders on its the Women’s World Cup Team and three riders on each of its Club division teams.
The World Trophy champion is determined by totaling the times of each team’s three fastest riders for each of the event’s six days (including time penalties). The team with the lowest combined time is the winner.
