Trystan Hart was back on top of the results at the Bad Medicine at Fallen Timbers Extreme Enduro that was held at Wildwood Lake Raceway in Little Hocking, Ohio, July 17-18, round five of the 2021 AMA East Extreme Off-Road Championship. The FMF/KTM rider took over the lead from Jordan Ashburn by the third checkpoint on the first lap and held the lead for the remainder of the race.
FactoryOne Sherco’s Cody Webb won both Saturday qualifying races but a crash in the first turn of the main event contributed to his ultimate second-place finish.
Ryder LeBlond put in another solid race to take the final podium spot on his Dulullo Racing Husqvarna.
Webb seemed set to have a good event by winning both Saturday qualifying races. He won the first race in a total time of 19 minutes and 18 seconds with LeBlond just 13 seconds back and Hart 42 seconds behind. Keith Curtis and Taylor Robert rounded out the top five in qualifying race one.
On the longer more difficult qualifying race two, Webb finished with a time of 39 minutes and 53 seconds. Hart was second, one minute and seven seconds back and Ashburn was just over two minutes behind Webb. Robert and LeBlond rounded out the top five.
Heavy rain made the difficult course even more challenging for Sunday’s main event, which would be a three-hour-plus-one-lap format.
Magna1 Motorsports-backed Ashburn took the early lead in the main event and led through the first two checkpoints on lap one.
Hart was second at the start, and despite a first-turn crash, Webb stormed to the front of the pack and took over the lead before the riders went through the third checkpoint. But then Webb had problems and lost over five minutes to Hart before the fourth checkpoint, which allowed Hart to take the lead ahead of Ashburn and LeBlond. Hart completed lap one in nearly 47 minutes, which was over three minutes ahead of Ashburn, four ahead of LeBlond and four minutes and 21 seconds ahead of Webb in fourth.
Robert was fifth on the FMF KTM at the end of lap one.
Webb managed to get back up to second place by the end of the second lap with Ashburn and LeBlond battling for third. The race for the top four did not change much despite the extremely tough course and over four hours of racing. Webb closed the gap a little on Hart and felt that he could have challenged for the win but cramped up at the end could not make a final charge.
After four hour and seven minutes, Hart completed a total of five laps to take the win. Webb ended up finishing 13 minutes and 26 seconds behind in second place.
LeBlond came out on top of his battle with Ashburn to take the final podium spot, 22 minutes and 50 seconds behind Hart.
Ashburn was 10 minutes behind LeBlond at the finish and was the last rider to complete five laps.
Rockstar Husqvarna’s Colton Haaker had a pretty quiet day, slowly working his way up to fifth place at the finish.
Quinn Wentzel put in his best result of the season with a sixth-place finish on his Rieju. He battled with Haaker and Robert and ultimately finished between them. Robert took seventh on his KTM.
Snowmobile Champion and part-time Extreme Enduro racer Keith Curtis finished eighth on his Sherco.
Daniel Lewis finished ninth on a Husqvarna and fellow teenager Will Riordan rounded out the top 10 on his RPM KTM.
“It was a fun weekend at Ohio,” Hart said. “We had lots of rain leading up to the race and with the clay dirt, we knew it was going to be an extremely difficult race. I had a very good start in the main event, which proved to be very important. I played it safe for a little bit, before getting into a groove and trying my best to keep it on two wheels for the remainder of the race. I’m extremely pumped to get my sixth win of the season at possibly one of the hardest tracks of the year!”
Cody Webb said, “I had a terrible first lap. Went down in the first corner, jarred my back 10 minutes in, got into the lead by the gnarly rock section and then just got ruined on a nasty hill climb that took me multiple attempts, and I had a huge deficit. I made a big push and closed the gap to the point I could’ve won. Then I cramped up last lap and couldn’t get the job done. Tough day for me with moments of brilliance, mixed with bad midrace decisions.”
“I got an okay start and went back and forth with Trystan, Cody and Jordan for a lot of the first lap,” LeBlond said. “On the second lap, Trystan got a little gap on us, but I was still battling with Cody and Jordan. I broke or lost three shifters during the race and finished the last lap stuck in second gear with no shifter so that held me back a little. Me and Jordan were together for most of the race, and I managed to pass him on the last lap and open a little gap.
The next race, Battle of the Goats, is scheduled for August 7 in Taylorsville, North Carolina.CN
