Peters Sweeps Lubbock Kicker Arenacross
The 2021 Kicker AMA Arenacross Series headed to Lubbock, Texas for rounds three and four of the series. The events were held at the Mallet Events Center and Arena on Friday and Saturday, January 15-16.
Phoenix Racing Honda Team’s Kyle Peters fought his way to the top of the podium for all four classes over the weekend, but this weekend it was evident that his competitors were challenging him more than the opening weekend.
Mike Alessi, on the Babbitt’s Kawasaki, grabbed the holeshot in the 250 Pro main Friday night. He would hold the lead for a few laps, but both Phoenix Racing Team Honda boys—Peters and Cullin Park—were hot on his tail, and they would ultimately go on to pass him. Peters took over the lead in lap four, and Park started to bring the heat on Alessi on lap six. Park eventually got around Alessi, making the final finishing order Peters, Park and Alessi. Kyle Bitterman (Kawasaki) was a close fourth, while Isaac Teasdale rounded out the top five some 10 seconds back.
The 450 Pro main started with another Alessi holeshot, while Peters came out of the first turn way back in fifth place. Peters made quick work to catch up to his teammate, Park, in second place, but Park made it clear he wasn’t going to give up his spot without a battle, and battle they did for a few laps. Peters eventually managed to get the edge on him, but it took some time.
Peters then went after Alessi, passing him on lap seven of the 13-lap race. Peters went on to take the win five seconds ahead of Alessi. Park finished a distant third, followed by Teasdale and KTM rider Tre Fierro.
Once again, Alessi kicked off Saturday’s 250cc Pro main event with his third holeshot of the weekend. However, Peters made quick work of Alessi and had control of the lead by the second lap. Peters would go on to take the win, while Bitterman fought his way around both Alessi and Park to take second.
Park held on and finished third, well ahead of fourth-place finisher Alessi.
Teasdale and Fierro were again fourth and fifth, respectively.
The final race of the weekend again saw Alessi take the holeshot, but he was no match for Peters, who got around Alessi on the second lap and would go on to keep his perfect win-record intact.
Alessi soon found himself in a battle with Bitterman over second place. Alessi fought Bitterman but with two laps to go, Alessi surrendered the position to the GasGas rider.
Park took fourth and Fierro fifth. Teasdale was sixth.
After four rounds, Peters has taken a firm grip on the overall Kicker Arenacross Championship. The Honda rider is on top of the leaderboard with 208 points, followed by Park with 168 and Alessi with 159.
