Pickerington, OH (September 15, 2020) – The AMA Road Race Grand Championship returns to Barber Motorsports Park in Birmingham, Alabama October 22-25 with the 2020 WERA Grand National Final.
The official U.S. amateur road racing championship, sanctioned by the AMA and operated by WERA Motorcycle Racing Inc., features 13 competition classes for motorcycles from 400cc to 1000cc.
The country’s top amateur racers will compete for AMA National number-one plates, as well as for the Nicky Hayden AMA Road Race Horizon Award, which goes to the rider showing the most promise for success in the professional ranks. Past winners of the AMA Road Race Horizon Award have included Xavier Zayat, Anthony Mazziotto III, Jason DiSalvo, Hayden Gillim, Jake Lewis, Ben Spies, Miles Thornton and Blake Young.
Other awards presented at the event include the AMA Road Race Youth Award, the AMA Road Race Top Novice Award and the AMA Road Race Vet/Senior Award.
Barber Motorsports Park is an 880-acre facility situated 18 miles east of downtown Birmingham, Alabama. It is renowned for its manicured grounds and immense vintage motor sports museum. Racers will compete on the facility’s picturesque, yet technical, 2.38-mile, 17-turn road-racing circuit.
“This has been a challenging year for our sport, but we have been able to give our racers an outlet to normalcy and have been able to host events starting in late May,” said Evelyne Clarke, CEO of WERA Motorcycle Roadracing Inc. “This event is a celebration of the season and crowns our champions. The AMA Road Race Grand Championship will join the culmination of the WERA Sportsman Series, the WERA National Challenge Series, the N2/WERA Endurance Series and the WERA Vintage Series for 2020.”
Clarke said coronavirus precautions remain in place for the October event.
“We are all still doing social distancing, wearing masks in gatherings and using sanitizers,” she said. “There are no spectators allowed. And we are being vigilant overall.”
