2020 RedBud 1 Motocross Results: It was a great day for 450MX points leader Zach Osborne who managed to build significantly on his points lead by winning both motos, both wire to wire, at round four of the 2020 Lucas Oil AMA Pro Motocross Championship at RedBud in Buchanan, Michigan, September 4.
On a first-of-its-kind Friday race and the first of a doubleheader RedBud weekend (another first for pro motocross), Osborne came out swinging in both motos and his number-16 Rockstar Energy Husqvarna was never headed, while all of the rest of the top contenders spent their day scrambling for whatever they could get.
Chase Sexton was one of the few riders besides Osborne who could find some sort of consistency on the day. The Honda HRC 450MX-class rookie finished second overall despite his best moto being a third, which came in the first moto. A hard-earned fourth in the second gave him runner-up honors.
Justin Barcia (Monster Energy Yamaha) went 6-2 for third overall after a fantastic battle with Adam Cianciarulo in the second moto. The two went at it hard early in the moto until Barcia took charge and managed to hold him off across the finish line.
Cianciarulo was fifth in the first moto, his 5-3 landing him off the podium in fifth for the first time in two races.
Marvin Musquin, the nearest rider to Osborne in the championship, finished between Barcia and Cianciarulo in the overall standings with a 2-6.
Defending champ Eli Tomac was consistent but not the kind of consistent he was looking for. A 4-5 netted him an unusually low, for him, sixth overall. And there appeared to be no obvious reasons for his sub-par performance other than his usual so-so starts, there were no crashes or DNF. He just couldn’t get it going today. Tomac wasn’t what you would call “buried” in the pack off the starts, but he simply struggled to make passes, making little progress in both motos. It’s now going to have to take something quite special by Tomac if he’s going to retain the number-one plate with just five races left on the menu. The next race is on Labor Day Monday, just three days away.
Osborne now leads Tomac, who is fourth in the championship, by 43 points. Musquin still holds down second but lost some ground to Osborne. The Red Bull KTM rider is 26 points behind Osborne and 13 ahead of third-place Barcia.
It was another extremely frustrating day for now-former 250MX points leader Dylan Ferrandis. The Monster Energy/Star Racing rider, who smoked the field in the morning qualifiers by nearly two seconds, ended up fourth overall, the victim of a crash early in the first moto and a terrible start in the second moto. And to rub salt in his wounds, the rider nearest to him in the championship going into the RedBud 1 race, Jeremy Martin, won both motos!
Martin, on the Geico Honda, made excellent use of two good starts and came away with another overall victory, the third in a row, with a 1-1. Martin took over the 250MX points lead in a big way. He leads Ferrandis by 12 points after trailing the Frenchman by four going into the race.
RJ Hampshire (Rockstar Energy Husqvarna) was second overall with a 2-5, and Ferrandis’ teammate Shane McElrath was third overall with an 8-2.
Alex Martin, on the JGR/Yoshimura/Factory Racing Suzuki, rounded out the top five overall with a 6-4.
Jett Lawrence, Cameron McAdoo, and Ty Masterpool, who rode brilliantly in the first moto, Justin Cooper, and Brandon Hartranft rounded out the top five.
Masterpool, who got the okay from his doctor to ride again just a few days earlier, was smoking fast in the first 250MX moto. He led the first nine (of 16) laps before surrendering to Martin and Hampshire. Masterpool had a bad start in the second moto (he was 22nd after the first lap) but climbed back up to 13th by the end of the moto.

QUALIFYING
The first-ever outdoor Pro Motocross doubleheader is up and running at RedBud in Buchanan, Michigan, September 4. The second race takes place on Labor Day just three days later on January 7. The weather is good for today’s race. Temperatures will be in the low ’70s by the time the first gate drops and there is no threat of rain in the forecast.
450MX Qualifying
Blake Baggett is the top qualifier out of the 450MX class. The Rocky Mountain/WPS KTM rider is obviously jelling with the RedBud track which has been left in its traditional form. Baggett’s hottest lap is more than a second quicker than the next-best time put up by Adam Cianciarulo, and nearly another second back is Cianciarulo’s Monster Energy Kawasaki teammate Eli Tomac, last week’s overall win.
Chase Sexton and Justin Barcia round out the top five.
Sixth quickest is Marvin Musquin followed within a second by Zach Osborne and Christian Craig. Broc Tickle and Joey Savatgy complete the top 10 qualifiers.
Jason Anderson, who won the first moto of the season at Loretta Lynn’s, is not racing after having surgery earlier in the week to remove a plate in his arm, which caused him to pull out of last week’s race in Indiana. He hopes to be back before the last round.
Max Anstie, however, is riding after suffering an injury to his jaw last week that resulted in a second-moto DNF. The HEP Motorsports Suzuki rider qualified 12th overall.
250MX Qualifying
Dylan Ferrandis ripped a heater in the 250MX class. The points leader posted a 2:03.508 which was well ahead of the nearest rider, his Monster Energy/Star Racing Yamaha teammate Justin Cooper, who logged a 2:05.128.
Ty Masterpool, back from an injury, surprised the paddock after turning in a 2:05.494 for third. Right behind him, however, is two-time 2020 winner Jeremy Martin.
Alex Martin, Shane McElrath, Mitchell Harrison, Hunter Lawrence, RJ Hampshire and Brandon Hartranft round out the top 10. CN
