Choosing the best ADV tire is always a challenge. You first must answer the question about what type of riding you will be doing, and that can change with each ride. Your tire choice can greatly impact the performance of your bike for the pavement, dirt or vice versa. And some rides will be heavily tilted towards pavement or dirt, in which case, you ideally want a more street-oriented or dirt-oriented tire, respectively. There are several 50/50, 60/40 options but those are usually not great in any condition. For this reason, if you can afford it, a second set of wheels makes choosing the correct tires a lot easier.
For our Honda Africa Twin, Dubya USA, which is in the business of building wheel sets using a variety of components (from companies such as Excel, Talon, D.I.D, Kite, Galfer, Motostuff and more) built us a custom set of wheels designed to perform, last a long time and, of course, look great. For our project, Dubya (pronounced like the letter “W”) recommends Talon Pro Billet hubs (which carry a five-year warranty) mated to Excel Takasago wheels via Bulldog stainless-steel spokes, and billet aluminum nipples. To add some style, they selected red hubs with black wheels.
Dubya USA Honda Africa Twin Wheel Set Rider Analysis
We’ve had this wheel set mounted up to our Africa Twin for a few months and all is well. Based on the build quality and our experience with Dubya wheels in the past, we are very confident these wheels will hold up to years of abuse. The Talon billet hubs include all the necessary spacers and hardware to mount up the front and rear brake rotors and rear sprocket. The rear hub also includes a cush drive, like the stock wheel, but it is a lot less bulky.
The wheels look amazing and, more importantly, make it possible to keep a set of street-oriented tires mounted up to our stock wheels that are currently fitted with Bridgestone Adventure rubber. We chose Mitas E-10 tires for the Dubya wheels for the dirt-focused days. We often use this bike for commuting and a lot of highway miles during the week, but when the weekend comes around, we can now swap the wheels over in about 20 minutes and have more aggressive tires that makes riding off-road a lot more enjoyable.
- Dubya’s heavy-duty hubs and wheels are stronger and lighter than stock.
- All necessary parts are included to mount up the brake rotors and sprocket.
- Amazing looks with the red hubs (also available in black) and black wheels.
- A second set of wheels is not a cheap investment and high-quality wheels like these are even more expensive, but the quality, looks and convenience of the Dubya wheel sets are, in our opinion, well worth it.
Standout Feature: Durable wheels and hubs that also look amazing
