Monster Energy Kawasaki’s Eli Tomac and Honda HRC’s Ken Roczen came into round 10 of the 17-round Monster Energy/AMA Supercross Series remarkably tied atop the points standings at 200 points apiece. They qualified 1-2 in daytime qualifying at Daytona International Speedway, too, and Daytona almost seemed set up to be a test of Tomac’s supercross-championship potential.
Tomac’s never won the supercross title, and his record of results while running the red numberplate on his KX450 has been poor in the past. He survived one round with the red plate in Arlington, at the Triple Crown event, and scored a win, but faltered only a week later in Atlanta, leaving him tied in points with Atlanta winner Roczen. Having won the Daytona Supercross three of the last four years, if Tomac struggled at Daytona, it could’ve been a sign that the pressure of winning a supercross title was too much.
But he didn’t. After qualifying first, and finishing third in his heat race, Tomac got a mediocre start, then passed his way through the field methodically until he took the lead with just two minutes to go in the race and sped off with the win—his fifth of the series—over Roczen, who led every lap up until that point. Red Bull KTM’s Cooper Webb put in a very strong ride for another podium finish to keep himself in the championship hunt.
Tomac now leads the points standings over Roczen by 3, with Webb 23 more points back, with 7 rounds left to run. It’s far from over, but Tomac isn’t buckling under the pressure by any means.
And in the 250SX East main event, fast qualifier Jeremy Martin (GEICO Honda) led early before getting tangled up and handing the lead over to Monster Energy/Pro Circuit Kawasaki’s Garrett Marchbanks. Marchbanks won his heat race earlier in the night and that seemed to give the young racer confidence. GEICO Honda’s points leader Chase Sexton got into second on lap two and couldn’t do much with Marchbanks out front. Marchbanks held strong and took his first-ever professional supercross victory over Sexton and Martin, the latter of whom had to fight his way back forward to third from about 8th place on lap one.
Rockstar Energy Husqvarna’s RJ Hampshire finished fourth just in front of Monster Energy/Yamalube/Star Racing Yamaha’s Shane McElrath, who went down on the opening lap with Marchbanks’ teammate Jordon Smith. Smith got up limping and DNF’d the race.
Sexton still leads the championship, now by 10 points over McElrath with 5 rounds left to run in the 250SX East.
The series heads now for round 11 in Indianapolis, Indiana’s Lucas Oil Stadium next Saturday night.

Daytime Qualifying
Monster Energy Kawasaki’s Eli Tomac has won the Daytona Supercross three of the last four years, and after last week’s remarkable fourth-place (after such a disastrous race as he had), he’s going to need the boost this week. He and Honda HRC’s Ken Roczen are tied atop the points standings after Roczen’s win a week ago in Atlanta.
Tomac topped the timing charts for the second week in a row, this time in Daytona, for round 10 of the 17-round Monster Energy/AMA Supercross Series. His time was over a half-second faster than Roczen’s in second, both with red plates on their motorcycles. Defending champ Cooper Webb was third in qualifying on his Red Bull KTM as he continues to recover from his big crash two weeks ago in Arlington.
And in the 250SX class, GEICO Honda’s Jeremy Martin topped qualifying. Martin is fast at Daytona. He finished second at the track on a 450 two years ago behind Tomac. Monster Energy/Yamalube/Star Racing Yamaha’s Shane McElrath was second in qualifying, while points leader and defending champ Chase Sexton was third on his GEICO Honda.
The racing kicks off at 7:30 p.m. Eastern Time on NBC Sports Network.
