Zac Speed Comp 2 Hydration System Product Review
By Jon Freehill
Zac Speed is an award-winning Aussie brand known for its well-built, modular pack systems for riders and athletes around the world. Every Zac Speed product is designed with a specific use in mind. This latest pack release, the Comp 2, is targeted toward racers and aggressive riders looking for a minimalist hydration solution.
The Comp 2 was designed to be high-performing and ergonomic. The pack is built from 1680D fabric to ensure long-term durability and features two YKK zippered compartments. The main compartment, accessed by a zipper the length of the bag, houses an insulated two-liter bladder and serves as the access for the company’s Configur8 backpack system. The other pocket is just big enough for smaller items such as phone, wallet and keys. The molded EVA foam back panel is designed to promote cooling and comfort.
The pack sports a redesigned harness that Zac Speed has dubbed their CoreFlex harness. The harness is built with an elastic suspension system meant to allow the pack to flex with your body to ensure maximum load support and comfort. The straps attach at the sternum with a single buckle and sit close together on the chest to prevent underarm interference. The removable waistband also incorporates an elastic suspension section for additional pack support or Configr8 customization. The two-liter slide-lock bladder has a standalone, neoprene sleeve for insulation and to make sure it never folds over while riding.
Zac Speed Comp 2 Hydration System Standout Feature: Comfort and construction is immediately evident and even fully loaded the pack is easy to ride with.
Zac Speed Comp 2 Hydration System Rider Analysis:
Racers need a hydration pack that requires little thought and performs reliably. It needs to be comfortable and not cause irritation on the shoulders, neck or back. Irritation causes distractions and distractions slow you down. In a perfect world, the pack would almost disappear altogether. The Comp 2 seems to do just that. After months of use, it’s hard to find things to complain about.
The aggressively narrow EVA foam back panel keeps the pack’s footprint small and out of the way on your back without feeling too small or unsupported. The thickly padded shoulder straps of the CoreFlex harness do not rub or chafe the neck or underarm area in any riding position. The sternum strap and Duraflex buckles hold everything securely in place, even through gnarly terrain. The suspension incorporated in the CoreFlex harness and waistband likely aids in comfort and load distribution but is not noticeable while riding. The pack does not bounce or move unnaturally. The quick-release water hose, slide-lock bladder, and hidden stitching make cleaning the pack and components simple. The Configur8 technology can be used to customize pack further to include items such as chest protector, tool pouch and more. Overall, we found the Zac Speed Comp 2 to be a high-quality, low-profile hydration solution aimed at racers and competitive athletes.CN
