AMA Supermoto Out to Revamp American Championship

Supermoto racing in the U.S. is set for a rebrand and revamp for 2020, as new series owner Alex Mock brings in some new and familiar faces to get the once hugely popular sport back on its feet.
Mock took over the AMA Supermoto Championship series in 2019 and admits he had a huge job ahead of him to get supermoto anywhere close to where its popularity was in the mid-2000s and has pulled in former MXGP and AMA Supermoto racer Darryl Atkins and former AMA Pro Road Racer Frankie Garcia to help.
“When I first set out to run the series it was a big responsibility,” says Mock. “I didn’t have a massive team behind me and just kind of went with it. I have a passion for this series and want to see it grow back into what it once was with support from sponsors and manufacturers. I knew I couldn’t do it alone, so I set out to find the right industry experts that were involved firsthand back in the series’ hay-day. We understand we’re a little bit late to the game this late in the year but I know we have a strong and passionate team that can get it done.”
For New Zealand-born Atkins, the chance to help revamp supermoto in the U.S. was too good to pass up.
“It’s great to see the sport of Supermoto is coming back in a strong way,” says Atkins. “I’m excited to be a part of it and to be working with others who have a big passion for Supermoto. We are working on some exciting things for the future as the sport has so much potential. We look forward to getting support from the industry as having a healthy Supermoto series only benefits everyone.”
Garcia will help with public relations and media duties, saying, “Alex and I have become pretty good friends in the last year. His passion for Supermoto itself is second to none. He is the guy that has kept the sport alive in recent years. I’ve seen firsthand the amount of work and attention he puts into it and I know what it will take to make this big again. I believe Alex has assembled a well-rounded team with Darryl and myself to help make it all happen.”
AMA Supermoto is currently finalizing the calendar for 2020 and is also putting together a live stream platform for each round. Once we have those details, we’ll share them here.
