Throwback Thursday: Daytona Holeshot for Kent Howerton
In this week’s Throwback we dial back the clock over 40 years to March of 1979 and that year’s Daytona Supercross. The photo shows action in the second heat race with Suzuki’s Kent Howerton (17) on the gas leading Kawasaki’s Jimmy Weinert (21). Weinert’s teammate Gaylon Mosier is also visible in the shot. It was a great heat race battle between the “Rhinestone Cowboy” and “Jammin’ Jimmy” with Weinert edging Howerton for the win. In the main it was Weinert taking a come-from-behind victory over Bob Hannah. Howerton wasn’t a factor in the final. He crashed early and eventually dropped out of the race.
