Throwback Thursday: Silverstone 500cc Grand Prix Battle
In this week’s Throwback we go all the way back to 1981 and the British 500cc Motorcycle Grand Prix at Silverstone. This photo shows an early-race battle somewhere just outside the top 10. That’s Brit Dave Potter (No. 8) leading the group ahead of Swiss racer Andreas Hofmann (No. 49) and American Dale Singleton (No. 30). Earlier that season Singleton won the Daytona 200. Singleton split time between America and Europe that year. He found the time to race four GPs and also won the AMA Formula One Championship. Interestingly, right behind Singleton in this shot is Valentino Rossi’s dad Graziano Rossi (No. 25). Also visible in the photo are Guido Paci (No. 50), Steve Parrish (No. 14), Chris Guy (No. 13) and others. Parrish came through to top this grouping. He finished 9th. Jack Middelburg won the race.
