Throwback Thursday: Still Crazy After All These Years
In this week’s Throwback we turn the time machine dial to 1992 and that year’s San Jose Mile. In this photo we see Larry Pegram leading Ronnie Jones. When this photo was taken by Mitch Friedman Pegram was a teenage flat track sensation already having a Grand National victory to his credit. Jones was a winning veteran who turned pro expert in 1979. Who would have dreamed when this photo was taken 27 years ago that these two racers would still be racing professionally in the year 2019, but that is in fact the case. At 45, Pegram’s had an amazing comeback run this year, so far scoring four top-10 American Flat Track National finishes, including a jaw-dropping fifth at the Texas Half-Mile on his Indian Motorcycles/Pegram Racing Indian FTR750. Jones is 58 and has been racing select events for years. This year he’s been back at select venues racing for Estenson Racing Yamaha. He’s yet to qualify for a main this season, but he scored a top-10 at Springfield last year and he’s looked good in some of the qualifying races again this season. I guess you might say that Pegram and Jones are a bit like the old Paul Simon song “Still Crazy After All These Years.”
