Throwback Thursday: A Quartet of Rose Bowl Yamaha Riders
In this week’s Throwback we dial the wayback machine 36 years to August of 1983 and the press day for that season’s AMA Supercross Series finale at the Rose Bowl in Pasadena, California. It was the first time Supercross visited the world-famous Rose Bowl. Photographer Mitch Friedman captured four Yamaha riders who’d gathered for the event before going out for laps on the partially complete track to give local media the chance to get preview video and photographs for their news segments previewing the race. The riders in the photo are (from left to right) Rick Johnson (No. 8), Ron Lechien (No. 224), Donnie Cantaloupi (No. 54) and Warren Reid (No. 10). In the background you can see the starting gate area of the track still being built and members of the media, teams and industry there to watch the proceedings. Broc Glover, one of Yamaha’s riders not pictured in this press day photo, went on to win the race that weekend at the Rose Bowl.
