The new Fox Racing Motocross Helmet was introduced to the media today. The completely new V3 helmet includes a lot of new technology to mitigate low impact and rotational energy. Fox partnered with Fluid Inside, a company that has done extensive research on head injuries and works with manufacturers to integrate its technology into helmets. They have worked with a lot with Hockey, Football and Equestrian helmet manufacturers, but this is the first motocross / off-road helmet to use Fluid Inside technology. Fluid Inside works with helmet manufacturers to strategically place their Pods, which are designed to mimic the Cerebral Spinal Fluid that surrounds the human brain within the skull, within the helmet and tune them for the specific needs of each sport and helmet design.
The other significant new design element incorporated into the new Fox Racing V3 helmet is the two-piece shell design. The entire front of the helmet is a separate polycarbonate / ABS unit called the Cage. The cage is bonded to the shell and EPS during the manufacturing process. Fox took this approach to provide a way to use a more flexible material in the chinbar, which is less likely to fracture in an impact, and also integrate much larger ventilation ports in the chinbar. The helmet includes much larger ventilation ports throughout the helmet than you will find on other helmets. These large ventilation ports include perforated covers (Super Injected Mesh) that are strong enough to resist penetration, which is part of the US DOT helmet standard.
The front view shows off the large vents integrated into of the top / front and chinbar.
The new Fox Racing V3 Helmet also uses the next generation of the Magnetic Visor Release System (MVRS). This was integrated into the previous generation Fox V3 helmet and allows the visor to break away in an impact to reduce the chance of twisting the rider’s neck. The MVRS was previously integrated into an existing helmet shell and this new model allowed for a more robust retention system to keep it from coming off without a major impact but will still allow the visor to break away in a crash.
The new Fox V3 helmet also utilizes Varizorb EPS liner. Some other helmet brands/models use a similar technology, sometimes referred to as “Cone Head”. Fox chose this to allow for strategic placement of crumple zones.
There are four shell sizes used for the new V3 helmet and it passes the US DOT and ECE helmet standards. The claimed weight is 1,350 grams, which is similar to the previous Fox V3 model.
The suggested retail price for the new Fox Racing V3 helmet is $500 for the white and black models and those will be available in motorcycle dealers and accessory retailers on May 2nd. The Zebra print will be available a day later on May 3rd. We will also be getting our first opportunity to ride in the helmet this week and will update this story with our first impression.
New Fox Racing Motocross Helmet
There has been speculation about a new Fox Racing motocross helmet being introduced this season and Fox sponsored athletes started wearing a new helmet this past weekend. Team Honda HRC’s Ken Roczen and GEICO Honda’s Chase Sexton and Christian Craig were all wearing the new model at the East Rutherford, New Jersey Supercross. Sexton earned his first ever 250SX main event win in New Jersey. Germany’s Manuel Lettenbichler was also wearing the new helmet on his way to winning the Machete Hard Enduro in the Dominican Republic.
Cycle News received an invite to a Fox event taking place later this week that included a password-protected USB drive. We expect to learn more about the new helmet and will share the information here as soon as that is available.
