In the second of three Triple Crown events, Monster Energy Kawasaki’s Eli Tomac came ready to fight at the 2019 Detroit Supercross. After two rounds of lackluster (for him) results, Tomac set fast time in practice, then flat-out dominated the first two 450cc main events of the night.
In the first main event, Tomac started poorly, but still managed to slice and dice his way through the field to take the lead from Motoconcepts/Smartop/Bullfrog Spas Honda’s Justin Brayton in the closing laps to take the win, while Brayton hung on for second and JGR/Yoshimura/Suzuki Factory Racing’s Chad Reed grabbed a solid third place. Behind Reed came Rocky Mountain ATV/MC KTM’s Blake Baggett, Honda’s Ken Roczen, and Red Bull KTM’s points leader Cooper Webb, who struggled in practice and in the opening race while he messed with his KTM’s settings.
Tomac Wins 2019 Detroit Triple Crown
Behind Webb came Rockstar Energy Husqvarna’s Dean Wilson, Tomac’s teammate Joey Savatgy, and Webb’s teammate Marvin Musquin. Early in the race, Musquin, Roczen and Tomac were all pretty close together, outside the top 10, but Musquin didn’t make up much ground while his teammate Webb lost ground throughout the bulk of the race after starting fourth.
In the second main, Webb grabbed the holeshot over Savatgy, but Tomac was hot on their heels and took over second place from Savatgy after a few laps, then set out after Webb immediately, going by the points leader in the whoops before taking off for the win. Webb hung on for a much-improved second place over Savatgy, Musquin (who started fourth and finished fourth, even after a fall when he ran into the back of Savatgy after Savatgy made a big mistake in front of him), and Reed. Roczen finished sixth after starting at the tail end of the top 10, with Monster Energy Yamaha’s Justin Barcia, Wilson’s teammate Zach Osborne, Wilson, Barcia’s teammate Aaron Plessinger, Baggett and Brayton rounding out the top 12.
Cooper Webb Battles Do Second Place In Detroit
In the final of three main events, Webb went back to his old settings, but it was Baggett who got the holeshot over Savatgy, Wilson, Barcia, Webb, Reed, Roczen, Plessinger, Musquin, Brayton, Osborne and Tomac. And things only got worse for Tomac when he went off the track early in the race and gave up a couple more spots before he mounted his charge back through the field.
Webb did likewise out front, though, as he worked his way by Wilson and Savatgy, then Baggett after Barcia took the lead away from him. And then, after a handful of laps looking for a way around Barcia, Webb made a pass stick and pulled away to take the win. However, in the waning laps, Tomac inherited sixth place when Roczen and Wilson collided, sending Wilson down to the dirt, and Tomac ended up sixth in the race, which was enough to give him the overall in Detroit by 1 point over Webb (1-1-6 to 6-2-1). Webb ended up second overall on the night, while Reed grabbed third after finishing seventh in the final main event of the evening.
Chad Reed Impressive At Detroit Supercross
Roczen was fourth overall, losing four valuable points to Webb in the championship chase, while Baggett was fifth and Musquin was sixth on the evening.
As the series heads toward its halfway point, Webb now leads the championship by six points over Roczen, with Musquin another six points behind, and Tomac one point further back in fourth.
Austin Forkner Wins 250SX Triple Crown
In the 250cc class, Monster Energy/Pro Circuit Kawasaki’s Austin Forkner somehow managed to look even better than he did in his first two wins of the season, absolutely dominating all three main events to become the first racer in history to sweep a Triple Crown event. He was on another level as he absolutely dominated all three main events and ended up winning the overall with a 1-1-1 score over TLD/Red Bull KTM’s Jordon Smith (2-2-4) and GEICO Honda’s Chase Sexton (4-4-2), while Monster Energy/Yamalube/Star Racing Yamaha’s Justin Cooper finished off the podium for his first time this year in fourth overall with a 3-5-3 score. Forkner’s teammate Martin Davalos was fifth with a 5-7-5 night.
Forkner now leads the title by 13 over Smith, with Cooper two points farther back, and Sexton another three back.
The series hits the halfway point next weekend in Atlanta, where we return to a standard format with a single main event in each class, but in the 250cc class we will see the first East/West Shootout of the year, with the East and West going head-to-head in the main event.
