2019 KTM Super Duke GT First Look—When KTM launched the 1290 Super Duke R in 2017, it entered the class with a motive to outperform—wait, crush—every other nakedbike on the market. And in many ways, it did. Now, the Austrians are taking what they learned in the success of the R model and are out to rule the sport touring market in similar fashion.
Enter the 2019 KTM Super Duke GT.
2019 KTM Super Duke GT First Look
The heart of the Super Duke GT is the same 1,301cc V-twin LC8 engine as the R model, which means that it receives revised resonator chambers, titanium inlet valves, and new engine mapping. The result? KTM claims that the GT will produce 175 horsepower while smoothing out power delivery at low rpm.
Keeping the all of 2019 GT’s throaty powerplant in check is a host of electronic rider aids, which is highlighted by lean-angle sensitive traction control and ABS systems. The Quickshifter + option is also available on the Super Duke GT, meaning clutchless up- and downshifts help smooth out the ride quality.
WP has also had its hand updating the GT for 2019, revising the semi-active suspension with a more sophisticated software to better adapt to changing road conditions. There will be three preset damping modes—Comfort, Street, and Sport—which are selectable via the new 6.5-inch TFT display that’s perched above the handlebars. Adding to the unique identity of the Super Duke GT is a facelift of the front end’s styling, which also comes with the inclusion of a new LED headlight.
On paper, the changes to the Super Duke GT look promising. More power, better handling, and updated electronics mean this is going to be a potent sport tourer. Surely, KTM has gotten this one right.
While we wait for the new GT, it’s important to note that it’s R model cousin’s development remains stagnant for the upcoming model year, but rumors have it that we will see a new 1290 Super Duke R in 2020. Time will tell. Michael Gilbert
