Throwback Thursday: Barnes Takes Surprise Formula USA Victory

In this week’s Throwback we dial the time machine back 21 years to 1997 and the Sunoco Race Fuels Formula USA season finale at Daytona International Speedway. The surprise victor of the final series event of ’97 was Florida’s own Michael Barnes (center). Barnes got a call to race the Dutchman Racing Yamaha just a week prior, yet he was able to quickly get comfortable with the bike and took a head-turning win over runner up Doug Polen (right) and third-place Eric Wood (left). Barnes called the victory overwhelming. It was the first major race he’d won in over a year, the previous being the AMA 750 Supersport finale at Las Vegas the season before.
