50 Years Ago / August 1, 1968
The 10-Mile Charity Newsies (Ohio Newsboys Association) National Championship made front-page news 50 years ago. Triumph-mounted Gary Nixon came through with the victory… At Saddleback Park, we covered the Firecracker International Motocross that included Torsten Hallman, Bill Nilsson, John DeSoto, Russ Darnell and J.N. Roberts. When the dust had settled, it was Hallman who stood out with the first-place trophy in hand… In road racing action, George Kerker won the Heavy Production class at Orange County International Raceway in California.
40 Years Ago / July 19, 1978
Terry Clark (44) and Rick Burgett got a little close during the AMA/Mr. PiBB 500cc National MX at Mt. Morris. Burgett came away with the overall win; Honda’s Jimmy Ellis won both 250cc motos… Jay Springsteen edged out Steve Eklund for the win at the Castle Rock TT in Washington… Kenny Roberts regained control of the 250cc World Championship after winning in Assen; Johnny Cecotto won the 500cc class… We featured an interview with Gary Scott… We showed you some of the factory MX bikes from the AMA Nationals.

Our cover story 30 years ago was the Mammoth Mountain MX, and A.J. Whiting was shown on the cover leading the way in the 250cc Expert class. Johnny O’Mara won the 125cc Expert class; Rick Johnson topped the 250cc and Open Expert classes… Scott Parker won the New York Governor’s Cup Half Mile at Middletown… Jeff Ward (500cc) and Guy Cooper (125cc) were the big winners at the RedBud National MX… Wayne Gardner won his first GP of the season at Assen… Larry Roeseler won the Trask Two-Day Qualifier.
20 Years Ago / July 15, 1998
Yamaha’s Simon Crafar was pictured on the cover 20 years ago for winning the 500cc GP at Donington Park and putting an end to Honda’s win streak… We covered Jeff Emig’s 250cc National MX victory at RedBud; Ricky Carmichael won the 125cc class… For the first time, a WorldSBK round was held in South Africa. Pier-Francesco won both legs… Geo Roeder II won his first ever National at the 96 Speedway Half Mile in Lake Odessa, Michigan… Johnny Campbell rode solo and won the BITD Silver State 300.
