In MXGP, Red Bull KTM KTM teammates Jeffrey Herlings and Antonio Cairoli went at it again for the moto and GP overall victories. Both times, Cairoli was leading late in the race when Herlings attacked. In the first moto, Herlings came up through the pack and started challenging the defending champ with a couple laps to go. The two Red Bull KTMs went back and forth a couple of times, the final time leaving Cairoli on the ground when the two slammed into each other exiting a turn. Cairoli was no match for the larger-framed Herlings who stayed upright and went on to win the race. Cairoli quickly got up and salvaged second place ahead of former champ Tim Gajser (Honda HRC), Clement Desalle (Monster Energy Kawasaki) and Romain Febvre (Monster Energy Yamaha).
Race two was another heartbreaker for Cairoli who led every lap except the all-important last lap, which is when Herlings, who chased in second from lap one, attacked and successfully completed a pass on Cairoli and took the checkered flag 1.1 seconds ahead of the Italian moments later.
The two KTMs were well clear of the next bike ridden by Febvre in third place. Febvre finished out the race nearly 39 seconds behind Cairoli.
Febvre crossed the line just ahead of Desalle in fourth, which opened the door for his first podium of the year.
Gajser was fifth in the moto.

The overall went: Herlings, Cairoli, Febvre, Desalle and Gajser. Glenn Coldenhoff (KTM), Evgeny Bobryshev (Suzuki), Tommy Searle (Kawasaki), Jeremy Seewer (Yamaha) and Max Anstie (Husqvarna) rounded out the top 10 overall.
It was again Red Bull KTM teammates battling for the overall win in MX2. Points leader Pauls Jonass and Jorge Prado battled back and forth for the lead at times in both motos, but, in the end, Jonass pulled through for the wins like he has so many times this year. With the double victory, Jonass extended his lead to 28 over Prado, 401-373.
Third overall went to Russian Calvin Vlaanderen (Honda) with a 4-3, while Great Britain’s Ben Watson (Yamaha) and American Thomas Covington (Husqvarna) rounding out the top five overall. Covington went 3-9 on the day.
“Things worked quite well for me this weekend and I enjoyed the British GP,” Covington said. “I had a decent start in the opening moto and managed to put myself in a good position. We had a great battle with Thomas [Kjer-Olsen] and I was happy to secure a third place result. My start was not as good in the second moto and I had to battle my way from the back of the leading pack. A small crash halfway through the moto made things harder, so I had to settle for ninth at the line. Overall, it was a positive weekend and I’m happy we’ve made some big improvements since the last GP.”
Third-in-points Thomas Kjer Olsen (Husqvarna) had a terrible day after suffering DNFs in both motos due to mechanicals. He still controls third in the championship but Watson is now just eight points behind him in fourth.
