The incident sparked a barrage of abuse from Rossi directed at Marquez, whom he claims had “destroyed our sport”, and with two weeks to cool off, Rossi was adamant his comments were not unjustified.
“I watched the race back, I think exactly what I said after the race in Argentina,” Rossi said to the assembled media at Circuit of the Americas for this weekend’s Red Bull Grand Prix of the Americas.
Rossi was pushed further to clarify his statements, but would not be drawn further.
“But it’s better to look forward,” he said. “I think it’s important to get back on track, ride the motorcycle, to try to get the maximum and work with the team. I’m very happy to be here. Also, because this track is very difficult, so you have a lot of work, it’s very long with a lot of corners—so we have to think about that. Do our work, and try the maximum.”
Rossi was asked an interesting question in that did he believe his rivalry with Marc Marquez now resembled that of Formula One drivers Alain Prost and Ayrton Senna, one of the most celebrated rivalries in sports history. Rossi denied this, stating it was too early in the year and with no world championship on the line, “The difference between this and Senna and Prost is that they were fighting for a title, and one or the other would win,” Rossi said.
