Ducati Developing Motorcycles With Radar—Ducati has just announced it has been developing a radar detection system for the motorcycle safety as part of its “2025 Safety Road Map”.
Ducati Developing Motorcycles With Radar
Dubbed ARAS (Advanced Rider Assistance Systems), Ducati started development of radar technology back in 2016, in conjunction with the Department of Electronics, Information and Bioengineering of the Politecnico di Milano University. There are two radars under development, one mounted in the rear of the motorcycle to detect vehicles in a blind spot and for traffic rapidly approaching from behind. This first system saw a patent filed concerning vehicle algorithms, with its own scientific publication presented at the IEEE – Intelligent Vehicles Symposium (IV) on June 11-14, 2017, at Redondo Beach, CA.
Later in 2017, after a primary technological partner for production was selected by Ducati, the second radar went into development. This particular item focusses on modulating cruise control speed and allows a given distance—selected by the rider—than can be constantly maintained to the vehicle in front. It then sends signals to warn the rider of any distraction-related head-on collisions.
Ducati has said it will release the new radar system on one model in 2020, but would not elaborate on just which one it would be.
The first step of the “Safety Road Map 2025” has been implemented, with every motorcycle to come from the Bologna manufacturer available to the public now featuring Cornering ABS. If you’d like to learn more about the Bosch Cornering ABS system, click here.
