2017 Monster Energy Cup Results: In the six previous years of the Monster Energy Cup, no racer had ever managed to win the event twice. And in terms of winning the Monster Million, only Ryan Villopoto had ever managed to do that, and he did it in the inaugural running of the event back in 2011.

With Davi Millsaps out with a broken elbow and a head injury, the only two racers who could’ve possibly repeated as Monster Energy Cup champs at the 2017 running of the event were defending champ Eli Tomac and 2012 champ Justin Barcia, but it wasn’t to be for either of them.

Red Bull KTM’s Marvin Musquin (25) duked it out with Monster Energy Kawasaki’s Eli Tomac (1) early in the first of the three Monster Energy Cup main events, stealing the lead back from Tomac after taking the Joker Lane on the second lap of the race, but Tomac went down really hard soon afterward and dropped out of the event. Anderson’s teammate Dean Wilson was the fastest qualifier in the daytime, and ended up third overall with a 3-5-3 showing, despite an obvious cough he believes he caught in the flight back from the UK to the US after racing for Great Britain at the Motocross of Nations. PHOTOGRAPHY BY STEVE COX

Musquin (25) knew he needed a good start in the third and final moto in order to give himself the best chance at winning the Monster Million, and boy did he get one.
