Throwback Thursday: 1986 Ascot TT National Lineup

In this week’s Throwback we reach back in the photo files to 1986 and that year’s Ascot TT National. Riders ready for the start of the April 18th national at the historic Ascot Park. On this night, it was Alex Jorgensen racing his Wood Rotax to victory, holding off a strong last-lap bid by Honda’s Bubba Shobert. Chris Carr was third.
Photographer Mitch Friedman found a high vantage point to take this shot. The stands weren’t packed, possibly due to the fact that the race was originally slated for April 5th, but had to be rescheduled due to rain.
From left to right on the front row you can see Shobert (1), winner Jorgensen (44), Carr (20) Doug Chandler (10), Pete Hames (32) and Steve Eklund (8).
It marked the final national victory for Jorgensen. “Jorgy” proved to be an incredibly versatile rider throughout his career, winning the Flat Track Slam – a win on each of the four flat track disciplines – Mile, Half-Mile, Short Track and TT.
