A talented field of riders charge into the first turn at the start of Moto 1 at the 1986 AMA 125cc Motocross National at Lake Sugar Tree MX Park in Axton, Virginia.
The holeshot was earned by Honda-mounted Jeff Glass (451) taking the inside line. Also getting great starts were Erik Kehoe (8), George Holland (11), Rick Ryan (20), Carlo Coen (77), Keith Bowen (9) and Guy Cooper (25).
It was a brutally hot mid-July day in Virginia, and it caused a lot of riders to lose concentration during one or both of the motos resulting in some wild swings in moto finishes.
Take winner George Holland for instance, Holland won the Lake Sugar Tree 125cc National on his factory Suzuki in spite of finishing only sixth in the first moto. Holland came back to win the second moto and that 6-1 was good enough to take the overall ahead of Honda riders Guy Cooper (1-8) and Willie Surratt (11-2).
