2017 Reno Arenacross Results: The Reno Arenacross doubleheader marked the official start of the “Race to the Ricky Carmichael Cup,” and despite the domination that TiLube/Jack Links/Tuf Racing Honda’s Jace Owen has exhibited all year, the reset in the points standings (similar to NASCAR’s “Chase for the Cup”) left him with a one-point lead coming into Reno. And just as champions tend to do, defending Amsoil Arenacross champion Gavin Faith, of the Babbitt’s/Monster Energy/Amsoil Kawasaki team, made hay, taking advantage of the points reset to go 1-1-2-2 through the weekend’s four main events, while Owen could only manage a 5-3-1-1. To make matters even worse for Owen, although he recovered to win both main events on Night Two, he failed to make the Head 2 Head Challenge on night one, which Faith won, awarding Faith 2 extra points over Owen, and then on Night Two, while Owen did make the Head 2 Head field, Faith won it yet again, losing Owen another point to Faith in the shorter, tighter championship chase.

On Night One, Faith was leaving as little to chance as he possibly could. He’s been here before, after all. After winning the Head 2 Head Challenge, Faith got the holeshot in both AX Main Events and led every single lap, both times in front of Rockstar Energy/OTSFF/CycleTrader/Rock River Yamaha’s Chris Blose, who managed to keep Faith honest in both main events. Owen, though, suffered poor starts from the second row, beginning the first main event in seventh place and eventually fighting his way up to fifth. In the second main, Owen started better, in third, but couldn’t make up much ground from there, finishing behind Faith and Blose.

However, Owen rebounded something fierce on Night Two: While Owen still couldn’t defeat Faith for the Head 2 Head Challenge on the second night, he at least made the Head 2 Head field. Then, in the first main event, Owen got the holeshot and checked out, apparently free from the nerves of his first championship fight. Faith managed to come in second just in front of Blose. In the second main event, Faith got his third main-event holeshot of the weekend, but Owen was hot on his heels and wasn’t about to let the defending champ go. Around the halfway point, Owen started looking for a way around Faith, and he found it down the rhythm lane before sprinting to a solid 4.7-second margin of victory.
Still, all said and done, Faith has drawn first blood in the Race to the Ricky Carmichael Cup, and despite dominating the majority of the championship, Owen finds himself trailing Faith by seven points with three weekends’ worth of racing left to go.

In the Western Regional AX Lites class, the championship continues to be a battle between Woodstock KTM’s Hunter Sayles and Babbitt’s/GPF/Monster Energy Kawasaki’s Ryan Breece. The two traded main-event victories in Reno, with Breece going 1-2 on the two nights, and Sayles going 3-1. Sayles leads the Western championship chase by one point with three races left to run.
