In this week’s Throwback, we dial the Wayback machine 37 years in to the 1980 San Jose Mile. A massive crowd watches Army-sponsored Mike Kidd charging into the first turn ahead of ahead of Corky Keener (No. 62), Scott Pearson (No. 95), Hank Scott (No. 14), John Wincewicz (No. 55), Bubba Rush (No. 24), Brad Hurst (No. 51) and others during a qualifying race for the AMA Grand National.
Kidd actually had Uncle Same cutting him checks in those days with his Army sponsorship. No doubt Kidd had one of the all-time great government jobs, right up there with the guys who got to fly around in F-14 Tomcats all day.
And check out the brave photographers right up to the edge of the track, including Mitch Friedman, who captured this image.
