In this week’s Throwback Thursday, we travel back 36 years to May of 1980, to a jam-packed San Jose (Calif.) Mile and the AMA Junior Invitational, a race that was part of the big springtime San Jose Mile National weekend. In the shot, captured wonderfully by freelance photographer Mitch Friedman, we see Jimmy Filice (17Z) and Rich Arnaiz (16Z), two of northern California’s top up-and-coming racers battling for the lead.
Filice’s machine broke and Arnaiz went on to take the victory.
The race was also notable by the fact that Dorothy Rowe (among the group of three riders just entering the turn) finished third, becoming the first female racer to score a podium result in a national flat track event.
