Ducati’s 1200 Monster will get a thorough rework for the 2017 model year and also come with a new and improved S version. The arrival of these two bikes brings the large-capacity Monster line to three with the addition of the 1200 R from 2015 and six in total thanks to the Monster 797, 821, 821 Stripe, 1200, 1200 S and 1200 R.
The 1200 has again drawn inspiration from the first machine bearing the Monster moniker of 1993, stripping away any unnecessary bodywork to reveal a fully naked machine. The engine is the latest evolution of the 1198cc, 11° DS (Dual Spark) series, delivering 150hp at 9,250 rpm (15hp up on the old 1200 an 5hp up on the old 1200 S and 93 lb-ft of torque via the Ride-by-Wire throttle.
The chassis is the classic steel trellis design that employs the engine as a stressed unit matched to a new single-sided swingarm.
This machine is also the first Monster to receive the Bosch Inertial Measurement Unit (IMU) and Bosch Cornering ABS system, bringing it in line with bikes like the Panigale and Multistrada 1200. As such there’s also three different riding modes available in Sport, Touring and Urban, as well as the Ducati Wheelie Control (DWC) system.
If you want a bit more bling with your bike, the new 1200 S will come with all the gear mentioned above and fully-adjustable 48mm Öhlins forks and Öhlins monoshock, Brembo M50 radially mounted four piston front calipers like those on the Panigale and exclusive Y-spoke wheels, a carbon front guard, daytime running light (DLR) and LED indicators. There’s also the Ducati Safety Pack with three-level Bosch Cornering ABS, eight-level DTC and nine-level DWC.
The Monster 1200 is available in Ducati Red with a red frame and black wheels. The Monster 1200 S offers the same Ducati Red, red frame and black wheel livery or the new Liquid Concrete Grey with black frame and black wheels.
