2017 BMW S 1000 R: FIRST LOOK

The BMW S 1000 R nakedbike has been a massive hit for the Bavarian brand since its inception in 2013 and hasn’t seen a huge change since then. This is essentially the case this year, although the engine is now Euro4 compliant and its gained an extra 5hp to boost power output to a claimed 165hp at 11,000rpm. Coupling with that slight power gain is a drop of 4.4lb to 452lb claimed.
More power, less weight for the Beemer nakedbike.
The S 1000 R gets the HP titanium silencer to give it more bark to match the bite, as well as a sportier look. And the S also gets the BMW HP Shift Assistant Pro feature for clutchless up and down shifts as an option.
Interestingly, BMW fitted vibration-free handlebars to this and the new S 1000 XR – no doubt a fix after years of customer complaints of their hands being vibrated to sleep (ours included) on long rides.
Other subtle changes include optional lightweight forged HP wheels, a new multifunction dash, smaller bikini fairing and new colors like Racing Red non-metallic/Blackstorm metallic, Catalano Grey non-metallic and BMW Motorsport (Lupine Blue metallic/Lightwhite non-metallic/Racing Red non-metallic).
