April 20, 2016 (Manlius NY) – Supercross- and motocross-racing champion Doug Henry will be honored by The Legends and Heroes 2016 Supercross Moto Museum Tour when it visits Boston’s Gillette Stadium for round 15 of the Monster Energy Supercross series.
Doug Henry was born in 1969 in Milford, CT. During his much celebrated racing career Doug Henry captured a combined total of 25 Pro Supercross and motocross wins and four AMA Supercross and National Motocross Championship titles. Competing throughout the 1990s, he is most remembered for leading a revolution as the sport’s first prominent rider to race a four-stroke-powered bike in pro competition. By every measure Doug was a true pioneer swimming against the tide every time he lined up to race. He ignored conventional wisdom by competing in an arena totally dominated by two-strokes, Doug is remembered today as a key step to the modern four-strokes that dominate motorcycle racing worldwide.
Henry won the 1997 Supercross season finale at Las Vegas racing a prototype Yamaha YZM 400, thus making him the first rider in the sport’s history to do so on a four-stroke. Doug’s victory that night changed forever the face of Supercross and motocross by opening an entirely new chapter for four-stroke engine design into the next generation of moto.
One season later in 1998, Doug became the first four-stroke rider in history to win an AMA National Motocross title. From that event forward, the AMA Motocross Championship racing would become the almost exclusive domain of four-stroke-powered machines. After retiring from motocross full-time, Henry went on to become one of the leading Supermoto riders in the world.
While competing in a Supermoto race in 2007, Doug broke his back and suffered partial paralysis from the waist down. The racer in him is still very much alive and Doug undauntedly continues to ride and compete aboard Yamaha motorcycles. Prior to Saturday’s Supercross event at Foxboro, he will ride his specially-designed Yamaha YZ450F a parade lap around the stadium. Concluding his lap, Doug will be presented the Legends and Heroes Award by his friend, six-time AMA champion Broc Glover on the Monster Energy Supercross podium Saturday evening.
